I suppose this thread has run its course, but just thought I'd say the transition from light to medium strings was a winner. My instrument is no more difficult to play and sounds so much richer...

(not sure how interesting this is, but I felt like writing it today)
It was 40+ years ago that I (at about 14 years old) was given a junky old mandolin from my grandfathers attic. After arming...
It is. Because, at least in my case, I don't connect individual notes on the page with individual frets. It's more about connecting whole phrases with intervals, scale and chord forms, boxes, etc....
Not just woodwind players and not just jazz players, of course. Most highly skilled musicians can do that. I have been playing through some violin scale books and they cover all keys.
Jon's right about older Chinese fretted instruments - and a few folk instruments today - but based on some earlier reforms, after the 1940's the Chinese rationalized frets on almost all instruments...
I've mentioned many times in the Forum my teacher is a professional violinist. She is an amazing teacher, although I feel she demands a little too much perfection from me, as a late-in-life learner...
I have a stenosis in my neck. Ultimately physical therapy eased the symptoms, but it did initially cause involuntary movements, which could be described as tremors, and weakness, as well as nerve...
With so many absolutely brilliant mandolinists exhibiting their remarkable talents on Youtube, perhaps it is overkill to post a video. Still, I found Danilo Brito's tremolo style, as shown on this...
I'm working on pentatonic scales and thought I might revive this thread.
Peter Ostroushko recently put up on his website (scroll to bottom of home page) the first episode of a podcast about his work as a radio musician. The music is fantastic, but Peter's telling of his...
I know nothing about fiddle, but from what I've heard, the fingering is the same as mandolin??
here is Cedric Watson playing Cochon De Lait alone, and then in a small group. I just think a...
I've been slowing some things down a bit and really focusing on that 4th finger, keeping it under control. It's helping a lot, as I can see out of the corner of my eye. My teacher says she can tell...
Here's a sample of older XT's. Not the best rendition but you get the idea. More like six weeks now.

Went looking for this and it hadn't been linked from anywhere in years. Well, what better time to resurrect? Some of you may visit this page. You may regret it. You've been warned.

I heard Tim O'Brien say, onstage as he announced a song: "Old time music - it's better than it sounds!". Someone told me that was said by someone else about Wagner.
I saw Peter Rowan 10-15 years...
The old Forum software has been reinstalled. But I wasn't done meddling just yet. I saw some things in the other version and decided they had their place here so changes have occurred in the...

A few days ago I had a pleasant email exchange with Mike Compton over a CD of his ("Gallop to Georgia") that I ordered but that for some reason got sent back. it sent me to his website, where I...
In my humble opinion, between the KM-950 and the KM-1050 you got the better looking of the two. With no difference in tone (except for individual mandolin differences) and the same appointments. Came...
My son and I took the Martin tour today. They had quite a few mandolins on display in their museum. Thought I’d share some pics.
We have a few links to videos and images of Monroe playing guitar here. Unfortunately this one is on Facebook so I'll apologize now if you can't see it. if you do have a Facebook account and can't...

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! I read this and couldn’t help but respond. I did finally get a Loar through Tony Williamson signed march 31 1924. It has been played a lot through the years...
