All mandolins sound different with different strings, I would probably keep experimenting, it's possible you will find even a better match. It also depends a lot on humidity.
I have one just like it, I bought new in 86 I believe. Mine is also in "cherry" condition, I just haven't played it much over the years, but as you said it is a nice well built mando. Good choice to...
