Re: David Benedict's new dream mandolin

I have Rubners on my last build and find they hold tune just fine. 26:1 is a huge ratio, I've never heard of mandolin tuners with that ration.

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

This thread reminds me of something I’d not thought of in many years. My wife and I got married very young and I started attending her church. I was 20 and had been playing (owning, really) guitar...
  5. Re: Grappelli style harmonics in swing jazz?

The harmonic avalanche is indeed a Grappelli trademark -- so integrated into his style that when another violinist suddenly playing a "harmonic flurry" in the middle of a solo, it so rarely sounds...

Grappelli style harmonics in swing jazz?

While we do have 12 or so natural harmonics available on the mandolin, I haven't heard them employed as freely as violinists use them in swing jazz.

    Grappelli in particular (e.g. 1.00 to 1.04...

Been playing in a church choir with mandolin, mandola, mandocello & guitar for years now. Only complaints I've heard were about not enough mando__ (fill in the blank). Advice: Sit in on a couple of...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

    A funny, fitting anecdote:

I only get invited to play Mandolin for service two times a year… Christmas and Easter.

Bass on the other hand…. Has brought me all around the State and filled my...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

I'm going to echo that sentiment. Just because I have a mandolin and can play it does not mean that I should automatically be included in any group, even if I or others think I should be.

    I...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

I am the pastor of a very conservative Lutheran church. As you could probably guess, most of our music is older hymns with an organ as accompaniment. I love that above statement because some...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

Well... I play mandolin, fiddle and guitar in my church band. No one in the congregation has complained about my mandolin renditions of hymns or the grassier tunes that come in for "specials". Maybe...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

Dan, we probably have an average attendance of about 150. I've played 2 or 3 solos with piano accompaniment, which seemed to go over well. Several members have asked why I don't play with the...

    Re: playing late and drinking

Half a lifetime ago I read an interview with drummer Carmen Appice, who consumed large quantities of bananas for muscle support against cramps. Could be a connection there.
  15. Mike Marshall & Darol Anger show on 2/9/24

My DH and I went to this concert Friday night at the Groton Hill Music Center in Groton, Mass. (This is the second show I've seen at this venue, the sound is superb).
