    Re: Tab vs. Dots

Well, certainly you need to hear a genre to be able to play in it -- i was responding to someone much further up the comment chain that struck me at the time as being one of those 'this way or the...

Thanks! Yes, but that's not the version we're covering.
If it comes to it, we also play Don't Know Why by Norah Jones, Make You Feel My Love by Adele, Ring Of Fire by Johnny Cash, Fly Me To The...

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

I certainly get it, and am in the same boat - but you can do that because you know what notation is supposed to sound like, and have a handle on the overall genre and what the style is. :)

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

"The person writing the tablature" today is mostly a computer program. Glancing at a piece of tab I'm usually struck, e.g., by the abundance of open strings, often in contexts where they're best...
  6. Re: Long-term (1-2 years) storage of a mandolin

And Detroit is similar to Buffalo, Madison and Syracuse, except that Madison is colder and it snows a lot more in Buffalo and Syracuse. Spent years in each place, like I said no issues. Ymmv.

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

Music theory isn't a set of rules you follow to make music, it's a description of the music, and a language for describing music. The theory comes from the music, not the other way round.

    Re: Under-rated mandolin players

Given the blank looks I get when I mention Chris Thile, Mike Marshall, Carlo Aonzo - even David Grisman and Dagger Gordon! - to friends and family, I think all mandolinists are under-rated.

You can look at Mandolin Mondays every week (thanks David Benedict) and see very good players who often are not particularly well known and could generally be said to be somewhat under-rated. There's...

OK, dots means standard notation. It's a really good thing to learn to read standard notation. I learned it when I took classical guitar lessons. There are several major advantages over tablature. It...
