    Ukrainian Pub Folk with Mandolin

Been a while since I posted anything on this forum, but one of my bands just released a new song with me playing the mandolin. I think it turned out pretty well, so I wanted to share :)

    Re: Drunken Sailor

Here's my band doing it, the mandolin should be loud enough to pick out. It's a slightly modified version, but the main motif is unchanged.

    Re: Beginner Mandolins

OP, FYI, there's a Kentucky 252 on the Classfields: https://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/117323#117323

You could do a lot worse for that price.

    Re: Beginner Mandolins

Some people swear by the Eastmans. A friend of mine has the 505, and it sounds good, though I never liked playing it all that much. I have The Loar 220, and it's a good instrument at the price. It...

Re: New Folk Rock Record w/ Mandolin Content

    Thanks for the kind words!

@JL277z: Yeah, we like to have our way with traditional tunes :D Glad that you like it, to be honest we didn't expect such a positive response for this specific song.

New Folk Rock Record w/ Mandolin Content

Hi, folks! My band ShamRocks just released a new EP today. Streaming is free, so feel free to check it out and let me know what you think!

Tracks 1 and 5 have mandolin content, recorded on my L&H....

Re: post a video of yourself

Some more Irish/Celtic mandolin. Drunken Sailor's Hornpipe (one of my favorites of late), taken at a street music festival in Lviv, Ukraine:

    Re: Character over practice?

The opening statement of this thread sounds like something that'd fit right into the "reasons to skip practice" thread :))

P.S. You do need to *practice* the technical skills as well as the...

Re: NMD: The Loar 370 VSM

I actually really like SIT strings (medium) on mine, especially when they're still relatively new. The unwound strings are clear and loud enough even for busking, while the wound pairs have a decent...

    Re: Bach, where to start?

Well, Bach is really not an easy one to pick up, so maybe try some "easier" composers before you move on to Bach? Not all of his pieces are challenging technically, but they do take some...

I've found that, the more you play, the less time you have for MAS. :)

    Re: Play for free ...

You could try dancing, it's probably not as embarrassing, but it does take a bit of practice to do both at the same time.

    Re: Ever have those nights...

^ That's interesting, cause I find some of mine actually sound better/fuller when it's damp as opposed to dry. Then again, talking 40~50% humidity, not 90~100%.

Re: Lost my A-Style - how to replace it?

I'd buy the same mando I bought two years ago - The Loar 220. All solid and carved, great sound, but not so expensive/precious as to prevent me from bringing it for trips, picnics and busking.

    Now...
  16. Re: New noob member, new "The Loar" mandolin, & endpin jack quest

A 'carpenter jack' doesn't make a mandolin look 'modified', IMO, it looks about the same as if you hanged a small mic on it. That's the most 'acoustic' and 'non-intrusive' you can get. I mean, you...

    Re: Play for free ...

Unfortunately, in most cases I've seen, it's just "cost-cutting" by the organizers, i.e. you are indeed being used. They wouldn't ask the company renting them stage equipment to do it for free, for...

Did a bit o' busking yesterday with my acoustic folk / ITM band, shame the video stutters a bit.

  19. Re: Centering mandolin on body vs centering its weight

I personally prefer the headstock option, then again I have a sizable belly to rest the mando on. I also tend to prefer the "under right arm" rather than "centered" mandolin placement.

Re: Have I found a Mandolin treasure?

Something like this would probably be the best bang for your buck at USD 250: http://www.theloar.com/products/mandolins/mandolin-lm-220-vs

The stores generally ask more, but if you look around and...
  22. Re: Is it a good choice pick a Neapolitan mandolin for Irish Musi

I'm with the "It's how you use it" crowd. The choice of strings, pick, and most importantly technique all affect the sound as much as instrument make.

Plus I think Irish traditional calls for a...

Not sure if it's right or not, but that's what the bridge on my mandolin looks like as well, and it seems to be fine.
