    Re: Aged-tone?

The mandolin that Cheryl has is one that was made with the oldest wood that I had. It was purchased from Ted Davis’ stash. I now have red spruce that was cut over 100 years ago. It is much older. It...

Re: The Dewey Murphy Loar Mandolin Project

Tony is a fantastic picker and everyone should look up Jerry’s mandolin album on YouTube. Jerry is a great picker.
The Murphy brothers played a lot in NC where I’m from. I love this story.

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

Sherry, I think the mandolin fits perfectly with most gospel songs. I would ask if you can sit it during the practices and maybe they will see how nicely a mandolin fits in.

That is a great album of a fantastic picker. I love his version of Orange Blossom Special.
  10. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

I can tell you from my experience they can be found. I had an Epiphone in the shop for a fret dress. The owner also brought a “big name brand” mandolin with it. The Epiphone blew it away in every...

Re: Darryl Wolfe selling off stuff

Darryl, I don’t see how anyone can be offended in the conversion. Who plays lutes these day anyway? The mandola coversion is perfect.

I agree. That one drink allowed me to just relax and play. It's easier said than done for me.

    Re: playing late and drinking

Years ago when I was in a band that played gigs regularly, we played a gig where I was given a mixed drink at the venue we were playing. I wasn’t driving, didn’t drink, and didn’t want to be rude to...

My favorite is carving the tops, back and shaping necks. The least favorite is sanding and finishing.

    Re: RIP Harold Killian

That's so sad to hear. Harold was a kind soul that loved Bluegrass music. He could "flat out whip a mandolin" as I heard others say. I played in a band with his brother, Tommy. We did a few shows...
