I believe David Harvey is really close to putting the 34 Wilson back to completion! Exciting as I'm very curious on how it'll sound! So really all that was done, is new tone bars, a dovetail neck joint added, with elevated riser block, correct neck set, carbon fiber in the neck, a replica ebony board, pearl nut, traditional bridge and guard and tailpiece-tuners also!
So yes a modernization really than a resto? It needed braces as it had none! and the original board was wrong and the neck set was impossible to do since the neck and neck block were one!
Very cool, Bill. I am looking fwd to hearing and seeing how it comes out.
Yes Jim when I get her back "2 years come October, its been gone!" But David is very busy between being head Gibson mando man, his various band gigs and repairs at home! Well worth the wait! I'll get photos and try to revamp my youtube account to post some video's? I have a neat video David sent me of the start of the separating of the 34 Wilson but I can't post it here? Its in my files with no http etc...And I'm not computer bright to figure out what to do to post!
I know David's work is top notch as he's done some repairs for me before and it all turned out awesome!
This thing will have perfect playability as before it was awful! I still can't believe there was no top bracing and the neck and headblock were one piece-that's probably why it was so unplayable, it must've shifted?
So William, I've always been curious about this mandolin. It has a more H-5 shape than F-5 shape. Is it F-5 sized? Congrats, I'd love to hear you play it when it's back together!
Well Marty it seemed bigger than an F-5, I never compared it when I got it as it went to Harvey about 2 days later! I'll know more when I get it back for a comparison with my 24 Loar and 26 Fern? It does look as though when Wilson built this he went by an H-5 type pattern! Its very interesting and for sure one of a kind!
What was the conclusion with this mandolin? How did it turn out? Any videos? New pics in last couple years?
