David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is'
I've recently been listening to this fantastic Grisman album of old tunes with an all star lineup. David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is' (1988)
For those that may know, which mandolin is Grisman playing on this recording? This was released a year before he acquired Crusher (1922 Gibson F5). To my knowledge, he played his Monteleone Grand Artist on most of the 80's stuff, but darned if this doesn't sound more like an old Gibson than a Monteleone to my untrained ear. Could be his Fern (1925 Gibson), I suppose. And it could be that he used more than one instrument on this album, as he is wont to do. Anyone know for certain?
Here's sample, for reference.

It seems that he did use the '25 Fern on most of the recordings. This pic Attachment 189337 and description is from the "Tone Poems" CD booklet.

Well, that was easy! Thanks for sharing, Geno!

I particularly like "Little Willey", "Feast Here Tonight", "Down in the Willow Garden" and "House of Gold", really classic stuff!
I think there's a nice "Georgia Rose" on there as well, I had it on cassette for while.

Yeah, this is such a classic CD set.
Another classic of that general time is "Home Today." One of my all time favorite bluegrass albums.

Well for me all of Dawgs music is where its at! I told David he's responsible for my vintage instrument obsession due to the original Tone Poems! That CD sold me in the early 90's when I was a poor high school kid pining to play and own all those great vintage instruments! Heck when my little boy was born a few years ago and spent weeks in the Nicu the Tone Poems were always played and hopefully seared into his developing little brain! GOD BLESS David Grisman!

Correction to my earlier post, the album is "Here Today."
Sheesh. . .

Luna, didn't catch that on your first post. That is an album I also enjoy a lot.

Here Today is one I just discovered recently after being mentioned by Mike Marshall on Artist Works. I really like it!!!
Dawg and Vince Gill?? Come on!
Re: David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is'
Home Is Where The Heart Is & Here Today, both favorites!
Re: David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is'
On the newest Doc and Dawg live album from Acoustic Disc, Grisman has a little banter section before the song My Long Journey Home called “two dollar remarks” Where he mentioned he wanted to call the album “Home is where the Art is”

Not to mention Herb Pedersen, one of my all time favorite harmony singers and banjo players. The whole band, material, mixing, energy. Just stellar.
Re: David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is'
I bought the LP 'Home is where the heart is' a long time ago. David's tone is iconic. His melody lines seem to almost be at the edge of what the mandolin can do. His chop is full of tone and not just scratch. This album is a bluegrass reference point. Get it.
As to which mandolin? I'm going to go look that up. Seems like it is in a article I read once.

Yes as previously mentioned the scratched up 25 fern. Attachment 189646
Re: David Grisman - 'Home is Where the Heart is'
Dawg was playing the Fern when I saw him a year or two ago with Danny Barnes and Sam Grisman. That's one fine mandolin in David's hands.
You can tell Dawg studied Monroe listening to him on "Home is Where the Heart Is." I believe Compton plays on at least one cut on that album as well.
