XS Strings, loud but shrill
I put a set of the XS on my MT. They are loud but don't have the sweetness of the EXPs or Elixirs. Any suggestions of other strings that might have the volume but also more mellow than the XS? I've had the XS on for about 3 weeks, which I think would be long enough for them to settle down.
Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
These are a tad pricey, but CM strings have proven a good investment in tone and how long they last R/.

Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
Check your intonation. I find when mine is not in good tune, or intonation is even slightly off it gets bright sounding. When it is correct it is warm and wonderful.
Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
try Curt Mangan monels or D'addario monels or nickel bronze
Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
If the harshness you are experiencing is from the plain strings, a different set most likely won't make a difference. Most plain strings are the same.
Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
I put them on a mandolin and the intonation was correct. They were as bright as the day I put them on 6 months later when I took them off. Thanks but no thanks.
Re: XS Strings, loud but shrill
Dredging this up because I saw that D'Addario has announced 80/20 XS strings for acoustic guitar. On their "bright - mellow" scale, they place the 80/20 set closer to the middle, vs. the brighter-leaning PB set. I wonder if they have any plans for a mandolin set? I would certainly spring for a set to try on my bright-ish Easman...
