I dont see it in any chord chart, but I pulled up G Jones and Tammy Wynette "Just someone I used to Know" and they are clearly playing in this key. Actually, I have seen it more than once. Is it a chord? Thanks

Step 1, try figuring out the names of the notes .. count up half steps 1 half step for each fret ..
Bottom to top, your notes would be Bb, Eb, Bb, G. Looks like Eb major.
Yar. It's the 2002 open D chord up a fret => Eb
When trying to sort out a chord pattern, figure out the notes being played and then what chord contains those notes.
This may be of use. There is an app called Chord Cracker for Mandolin. I found it very useful because you can either use it's chord dictionary or enter fingerings and it will tell you the chord you are playing. You can also select a key you want to play in so the chord name is based on that key. Another great feature is the ability to experiment with different tunings. You can then check the chord dictionary for that tuning or just enter fingerings again to figure out you own chord shapes.
Thanks to all. I guess I will have figure what the other two chords of the 1, 4, 5 progression is. Or just keep it easy where I already am!! Good fun indeed.
The 4 is A-flat and the 5 B-flat. Ab is 1134, Bb is 3356. Or if you know D, G and A chop chords move them up one fret.
Or (c'mon over here, so I can whisper without others overhearing) get a capo, put it on the first fret, play in D.

That's an inversion of Eb major (top note is Bb). Usually you can omit the high E string when playing the chord unless that note is needed for the melody etc. Personally I rarely play the high E on this chord (unless it's needed for some reason)
If you ever get stuck on a chord, just figure out the notes in the chord, then write out the fingerboard showing all the possible arrangements of those notes on the finger similar to this https://musicmotivated.com/mandolin-...key-of-e-flat/. Aside from finding the chord you want, you'll see other (possibly easier) ways to play that chord.
A great way to practice this is by playing the chord in multiple positions based on the chart. So start off with your 3 1 1 3 chord, then move up to 3 5 6 3 or 3 5 6 6 then move up again etc.
The easy-peasy Bb chord is 3011. Also you can use it to resolve to the Eb 3113 coming up from below.Quote:

So I was just noodling around a bit - definitely, decidedly not practicing ;) - and I thought I'd play this 3001 chord, instead of just thinking about it. It's nice enough, I suppose, sort of moody. And I liked how well it goes with my patented Fma7 chord, 5300©, as well as that nearby patented Am chord, 5200©. These all work one or another open string fifth interval, and just hang in the air rather nicely. :mandosmiley:
It's a D-sharp or E-flat, depending on context.
If it's also the key you're actually playing in, flat keys tend to be used for sadder songs and sharp keys are more often used for happier songs.
On my octave I’d definitely use a capo if I have to play in this key, on the other hand the key of Eb does have some real advantages over other keys in terms of certain moody feelings, having the major 7, among others, as an open string etc.
