New Mandolin Day. Newly acquired by the person posting. And picture(s) always required or at least desired. This Brentrup is one beautiful instrument. Off topic but zi do wish Homestead would actually reboot their basically empty website.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Enjoy Eric, I love my Brentrup.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Congrats, Eric. I recently got a 2002 23V and posted about it here. They are something special. https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...-Hans-Brentrup
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Hey, Eric, welcome to the Hans Club. I still treasure mine. I guess at that point Hans just has that B on the headstock not his full name. Best of luck with it. I only played one of those Stealth models aside from my A4C.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Congrats! You're getting quite the collection :)
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Wait - what? The Homestead had a Brentrup? Sorry I missed that!
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
I also should add congratulations, Eric. Youre a very fortunate fellow.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Hoping to hear that one someday. Congrats!

Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Really enjoying it.
A couple of things. The neck is narrow in width, but somewhat deep front to back. Still adjusting to it. Am used to 1 1/8" or wider. Also, while looking it over yesterday, realized the back of the headstock has a maple overlay. It's more of a burl than flame of the rest of the neck. Also discovered by chance that the back is a deeper carve than "normal".
Lastly, a photo of the label showing the scratched out warranty info.

Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
The scratch out on the label is curious. Maybe a second owner brought it back to Hans and gave him a hard time? I have to measure the neck on my A4C. I don’t think it is particularly narrow but it is on the funkier side, but not more than typical teens Gibsons. I assume the “B” on the headstock was only for the early ones. On the registry site there is a 1999 one that precedes yours, Eric, and it has that “B” as opposed to the inlaid pearl “JBrentrup.” There are no mandolins from 2000 on the site. By 2001 they all had the “JBrentrup” inlay. You should contact Larry and get a listing for yours on the registry.

Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Mine is from 2005 and the neck is 1 1/8" with a shallow depth. I like it a lot, and it has spoiled me.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
My 2002 has the same profile as yours, pops. Easy player. I was a little nervous about the neck profile when I was deciding to buy it, but it works like a charm.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
I just checked the nut width on my A4C and it is also 1-1/8". Like I said a little chunky but no worse than teens Gibsons. A little heftier than Gibson snakeheads but still fine for me.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Congrats Eric! Interesting about the label. Maybe this was some kind of one-off prototype. The important part is that it sounds like it found a good home, congrats!

Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Update - after looking at the bridge on the mandolin, had two thoughts 1) it's too far back. A quick check of the 12th fret intonation confirmed this; 2) wonder if a CA bridge saddle is taller and would look less out of place? Yup.
Looks a lot better now. And still happy with this one -

Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Yeah buddy, that is one mighty fine mandolin! I've never had the pleasure playing one of these! SWEET!
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Just a little update - was able to play mine side by side with Fred Keller's Model 23 from 2007. Both have a 1 1/16" nut width. His is more V shaped than mine.
Was also able to compare, and yes, the neck on mine is set back much further. Fred has a Brekke on his and there is no way one would fit on mine. Definitely more like folks described John Duffey's mandolin with the bridge on mine being approximately 1" tall at the center.
Both were good, although one can tell (a) Fred has played his a lot more, (b) his has a varnish finish, and (c) the tone is different. Maybe his is better. Maybe. But am still not complaining about mine.
Pops1 - too bad you didn't come over to Lanesboro. We could have had three to compare and contrast.
Re: NMD - Brentrup Model 23
Eric I was at Lanesboro on Friday, wished i'd have known you were there.

Could you talk about the difference in tone in the two instruments, please.
I played a PML (Poor Manīs Loar) at TAMCO quite some time ago. It didnīt have the best setup. Yet it sounded very nice (certainly top tier).
What do you mean by "the neck on mine is set back much further"? Do you mean that yourīs has a steeper neck angle and therefore needs a higher bridge (and therefore has more pressure on the top)? I find it interesting that these factors cause inconsistencies in mandolins. I know at least 3 Vanden mandolins. They are all different. While they are all good mandolins I sort of like only one of them (soundwise). It has to do with the differences in the way they are built.
