Anybody know of any good “picture” or history books about mandolins?
Here's an old but good one, freely available online:

This one just covers Gibson mandolins but should still meet your criteria.

Unfortunately, it appears Graham's book isn't currently available in print but you can still purchase the e-book.

Sue, I had hoped it would be available by now, but the publishing industry moves in mysterious ways. Lemur Press is a publisher which finds out-of-print books and reprints them to give them a second life. I could not find anything obvious which screamed 'scam', so I went with their offer and I can only hope the book reappears sometime soon.
There are a few of us a bit in love with those eyes. Martin Stillion in Seattle is convinced her hame is Helene and there is a wonderful back-story.
Cheers
There's always the books by Paul Sparks, The Early Mandolin and The Classical Mandolin. While they've been out of print for a while they are available, but a bit pricey.
Pictures being worth a thousand bibliographic words ...

Me too; it's a great book. Got it as a Christmas gift a few years ago, and disappeared into it for about a month. Now it's on my "reference shelf."
Reminds me of the old joke about the youngster reviewing a book on penguins: "This book told me more about penguins than I cared to know." Really comprehensive, well-written and illustrated, and one that every mandolin nerd should own.
It is entirely possible that the books are in a container somewhere. They are not really my books anymore, they belong to Lemur Press, who are not being responsive to emails. We shall see what happens. There is a shortage of printing paper, as the paper mills, so I am told, are finding it more profitable to make corrugated cardboard for packaging rather than nice white paper for book printing. My US distributor, who also do print-on-demand short runs of my other books, has announced a 6% rise in printing costs because of the price of paper.
Cheers
An update on The Mandolin - history. I received an email a couple of days back from the publishers where going to re-print the book. They have gone out of business, and as The Mandolin does not seemed to have been re-printed, or at least not listed as available on their website it would seem unlikely that copies will be available soon. My only option would seem to be to find a printer who can print individual copies on demand (such as BookBaby) and mail them out to the purchaser. Initial research suggests quite an expensive book when done that way. Other suggestions welcomed,
Cheers
Graham: I don’t know if it makes more sense for you to publish in Australia, but I worked on a book published by Lulu.com here in the US. See what the costs are like. I think they will do it on demand.
My DH has a book he's written, he has it printed through Snowfall Press https://www.snowfallpress.com/
He likes the service, but if you want to be on Amazon, you have to open an account and ship the books to your customer. Kind of a PITA if your book sells well, which is what you are hoping for.
Amazon itself has some kind of printing service, not sure how it works, but that is how Duke Sharp does his Garage Band Theory book. I bought one directly from Duke (at a savings) but it was shipped in from Amazon. He's a member here, you could ask him about it.
Check out 'The Early Mandolin' by James Taylor and Paul Sparks. It's a great work on the development of the mandolin from the mandolino to the neapolitan mandolin which where the mandolin really became popular.
For an entertaining novel about about a Bluegrass mandolin player, check out Gary Fagan's "Valentine's Fall".
It is a great book. It moved me to write this:
I just finished reading The Mandolin in America. I really enjoyed it.
