Has anybody used a Northfield model M?
I’ve been thinking about upgrading. I have a Loar lm-600 but I feel like it’s time to start looking for something different. It’s not the worst mandolin but it does feel a little dry and choked on the lower end, almost tinny. Like it doesn’t have a good oomph behind a chop like I’m looking for. Naturally I’m looking for a more budget friendly upgrade so I’ve been waiting for a used Northfield model M to show up. Spec wise and from sound clips it seems like it would be a reasonable choice. Do you have one? Do you like it? I’ve also been looking into used Gibson A9 models which seems like another bare bones mando that may give me a better sound as well.

Sorry I can't give you any empirical advice, but as a fellow Pisgah owner :mandosmiley:, I can tell you almost assuredly that a Northfield M would be a major and positive step up from your Loar.
You may get a lot of advice on the rest of this thread on different brands to purchase, but if you have your eye on that model, I see it as a can't-lose situation. You will be more than satisfied with that choice.
Re: Has anybody used a Northfield model M?
When you decide to sell your lm600 ring me up if it's a late model in A+ condition.

There is one in the classifieds at the moment....

And as far as bang for the buck goes this Econo A from Silverangel is really hard to beat for a small shop American made mandolin...

I wholeheartedly agree with Charley regarding the Silverangel... working on a budget as you are, I saved up and bought my Forever mandolin; custom made per my preferences. Truly outstanding instrument at an excellent price!
Edit: all the posts after Charles's showed up when the page refreshed... congrats on the Northfield!
check out "Coffee and a good book" to hear a M model
while you are waiting for delivery on your Northfield M, here's an excellent solo album that used only an early model Northfield M by Andrew Buckner. Andrew is a fellow Cafe member. Highly recommend his album.

Very happy for you!
Post pix and a sound clip after it arrives if you can.
Quite a step up from your Loar. Play it in good health!
