Definitely not casein...
It's easy to check, just touch it with hot pin, if it will produce smell bad like burnt milk it's casein if it will burst into flames it WAS celluloid :D . No not realy, don't do it. Just the first pic in the thread had a color streaks that reminded me of galalith (casein) more than celluloid. Celluloid is pretty simple stuff main difference is the coloring used, some pigments may cause some minor changes of properties especially if used in higher percentages especially the non-translucent kids or pearloid types but I think they would be more or less negligible for a picker.
I saw some casein sheets for sale few months ago that would definitely yield picks for under $2 a piece. But you would have to make them yourself. But I prefer celluloid over casein anyway :)

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I always loved Golden gate pics, but found they wore way too fast and yes get “scratchy”. Definitely going to get this new version and try. Thank you for posting.

Hi Perry... these X-Stiff GG picks I am currently using do not seem to have the problems the older versions had. I have experienced virtually no wear at all with these "newer" ones...

Ordered and on the way; I opted for "clown barf".
Thanks again for the tip!

Yeah Mon... I hope you dig 'em! If the "clownies" don't hold up for you PM me and I'll send you one of the tortoise versions...

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I have some "Alice" branded 1.5mm celluloid triangles that I quite like, and a big bag of them from a Chinese ebay seller was less than one upmarket pick. No clown barf though - there's red/white/blue confetti, tortoise and a couple of pearloid colours. I still like my Wegens and Hawk, but for something to use outdoors or leave tucked under the strings of a wall hanger instrument they're just the thing.

Held up great after last nights gig! I will PM you.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I have some of the clown barf and tortoise colored picks in X stiff. The clown barf feel a bit thicker to me and don't go through the strings quite as easily as the tortoise colored picks. Just got the tortoise colored picks so will give them a workout in the campground at a festival next weekend.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
Another vote for the GG clown barf & ivoroid, both in x-stiff. Nice sound, nice feel. Also tried the Radex 1.25mm mentioned above, & I like them, too. And Prime Tone.
I only use picks on mandolin family instruments; I'm a fingerstyle guitarist. And, I don't have a hard aggressive attack on the strings. But these inexpensive picks make me wonder why I spent the money trying boutique picks.

Amazon stocks them. Banjo Ben use to, but I’m not sure if they still get regular supply.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I got mine from Hobgoblin Music in Leeds.

Don't know about "regular" supply, but they have them as of a minute ago.

That’s great! The last few times I checked they were out of stock, but I could imagine it having been some sort of pandemic logistics fallout.

There's somebody selling them on eBay by the dozen. That's where I ordered mine, got them quickly. Looks like he might be out of Clown Barf, but has some other options:

Though I have heard good things about the Golden Gate X Stiff Large Triangular. It does look interesting. I am on the look out.

Go for the faux tortoise version... I tried the clown barf version and the tone it produced was not as nice as the turtle...

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I sanded a bit of a bevel in mine. I like them but I still ended up back with the BC CT55.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I just bought one of these (in the color called clown barf, lol) and I’m super impressed with them as well. I’m pretty new and trying out a whole lot of different picks. The golden gate x-stiffs have been my favorite so far!

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
In do like these but alas they will scratch. I suppose I could buff them out but not worth it. It scratched to the point where it would catch on a string. For that reason I am out as they say on Shark Tank. Back to Blue Chip. I did order some Radex but have not tried yet.

I remember that the older Golden Gate picks did scratch very easily, but I have had no scratching whatsoever with these new ones. As in zero scratches. For me they are just durable as my blue Chip pic… So perhaps you got some old stock instead of the newer version.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I have one in the clown barf colors. A very nice pick. I use in my rotation in addition to Blue Chip and Wegen, among others.

Re: Golden Gate Large Triangle X Stiff
I have never tried the triangle shape. I prefer a rounded pick but may have to give it a shot.

The Radex picks are very nice also.
