My latest baroque mandolin
Re: My latest baroque mandolin
I am ALWAYS impressed by your work and understand how incredibly challenging this would be for someone like myself who has plenty of experience, but in a completely different style! Keep up the great effort...
Re: My latest baroque mandolin
Yet another really fine creation, Jo. What an amazing headstock on this one! If I am seeing correctly, you have an octave in half tones on the top course with frets reaching into the sound board? What are the six courses tuned to?
Lovely work as always.
Re: My latest baroque mandolin
Thanks both!
Tuning is gg bb e'e' a'a' d"d" g"g".
Re: My latest baroque mandolin
Very cool. Will check out your site.
Re: My latest baroque mandolin
I have always wondered is it hard to keep the fret in place? It seems like it would slide around easily.

Not usually an issue. If they move around without being intentionally moved, they are not tied tight enough :).

Well tied gut (nylon) frets stay where they should be.
Some players do adjust them a bit for specific intonation; most folks tend to leave the frets in more-or-less 12 tone ET tuning same as a modern mandolin, though.

Here's a sound sample. Pardon my playing, I've been focusing on learning oud so haven't played anything this small or with this type of plectrum in quite a while. Also pardon my lockdown belly which I'm working on...
