Gibson A-50 up for auction
https://www.proxibid.com/Gibson-Mand...18220#topoflot
Price is rather low. Looks to me as if this one once had some kind of microphone attached in the past. No clue on the straightness of the neck, action or anything else.

Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
A 15% buyers premium will be added to the final price, plus sales tax.
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
Is the “15% Buyers Premium” in addition to the “Internet Premium”?

I couldn't tell you for sure, I thought they would be, it is a good way to get an extra 30% from those not paying attention or asking questions.

There’s usually an additional premium to allow you to bid on-line but it’s usually considerably lower than the buyer’s premium. Add to that the seller’s premium and the auctioneer is on to a good thing!

Sold for $525. Even with the additional premiums, that looks to me like a good deal.
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
I have a question, would it be possible to sand down the top and have the mandolin as a natural/orange-reddish colour?
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how thick the top is, and how deeply the finish has penetrated into the wood.
When you strip an instrument to bare wood, you will lose at least a bit of the wood's original thickness. If the instrument was built heavily, losing one or two hundredths of an inch might not hurt it. If it was lightly built, losing the same amount might be enough to cause the top to collapse, sooner or later.
That mess behind the bridge worries me. I don't know how much whatever it is that has caused the finish to discolor has sunk into the wood.
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
About the red mark, yes I agree, the only thing I can imagine is that an electric pickup was fitted inside the body and used to get hot?
It seems like it’s under the finish? So the mark would run all the way through.
The pattern is interesting! :) Could do a cool hippie paint job on this mando…
Also, about sanding it down, I wondered if chipped or damaged edges of tops are used by Gibson and then filled and sprayed over with the black paint?
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
After some thought, I do not recommend a natural top finish on this instrument. By the time you sand the color out of the wood, the top will be too thin.
Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction
To my untrained eye it looked like the stain is from red felt under a Dearmond "monkey on a stick" pickup. Maybe someone got the felt wet and it bled? Stained the top so either keep it as is, or refinish it black.
