Bill Monroe talks about his Lloyd Loar in an interview

I wonder what year it was done?

The damage was in late 1985, and the return to WSM was in February 1986, I believe. $5K for a Loar would have been a really nice deal. I think the asking prices were upwards of $40K at that time. Monroe's July 9, 1923 Loar was then, and remains, priceless.

In 1985, Loar mandolins where not anywhere near that expensive. I don't remember the exact price, but I would guess somewhere between $5K and $8K. As a comparison, Martin D-45's were $10K or less, and herringbone D-28's were a few thousand. And Bill was no dummy, he knew what his instrument was worth.
