German style bowlback on vitamin therapy! :) I agree: looks like fine workmanship. It is good it comes with a case. Good luck to find a case that fits otherwise.

I presume the wooden 'band' below the bridge is to dampen the unwanted string resonance there?

Possibly so, also could be a partial arm support.
