F5Loar the F5 is part of the mystique and legacy of bluegrass. I agree with you about its popularity among professional bluegrass players. Steve Gilchrist saw an opportunity to build F5s for this market and so have many others. Whether you like it or not it won't go into obscurity. It is here to stay.

Surprised to see the voluminous response to this post.
I don't like artichokes. Anyone else?

I haven't had one in the last 60 some odd years or so. I'm with you.

I agree about the odds but it would have been pretty funny.

You never know (with vegetables or mandolins).
I hated brussels sprouts until my late 50's. Now I love em.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
Funny you should mention, Sue! I never liked Brussel sprouts either, and now I like 'em too! Had to wait til I was 70, though.
You're right, Mike - if ol' Bill had found that one A-5, just imagine the gyrations we all (and Gibson!) would have gone through to sound and look just like Mr Monroe!

I did a pasta dish with artichokes and bacon last week. It was a "empty cupboard" dinner. Turned out pretty good. I like to fry artichokes in a cast iron skillet.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
I find the scrolls of the F style to be quite beautiful if well executed, but that type of construction is a hindrance to me. I frequently employ a thumb over the top of the fretboard in chording and the presence of a scroll really inhibits that practice much above the 10th fret. Given the higher price such additional ornamentation commands, and the limiting factor for my playing, I've pretty much ruled them out for my use. I figure if Tim O'Brien can somehow manage with an A-style, that's good enough for me!

I have never met a vegetable I didn't like. As a kid (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), my mother would give me Brussels sprouts or cauliflower as a 'treat' and I fell for it. Stuck with me to this day. I love them all!

I've found that when you cook brussel sprouts you should cook them the same way I cook Kale. I mix in a little olive oil as it makes both of them much easier to scrape off the plate into the garbage.

:)):))
My Mom used to cook them squishy. I roast them, often with bacon.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
I like F styles but I prefer playing an A style. I think it balances better whether standing or sitting.

I'm on a variety of other instrument fora, and I couldn't say that I've noticed such preoccupation with a particular phenomenon such as this. The cosmetic feature of an instrument just doesn't evoke such vehemence on any other instrument, it seems.

I will roast my A style, but the F only gets cooked on the grill...

Equally surprised by the response.
I find that if you don't like the tone of grilled artichokes, you probably won't like the tone of baked artichokes either. Also, it's well nigh impossible for me to mention or hear artichokes spoken of without thinking of them as "fartichokes" lol (book reference)

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
Artichokes are good for the liver - don't knock them. Same way an F5 is good for Bluegrass music.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
One of the many dumb decisions by Gibson over the years, was not patenting/trademarking the "F" silhouette -- which they surely could have done. How many gazillion F-models have been churned out by Asian factories in the years since, not to mention the US makers who made, and still make, F-model-shaped mandolins.
I play mandolins of all shapes, ones that resemble guitars, oval-hole and f-hole "A's," flat-top Army-Navy and bouzoukis, bowl-backs, mandolas of different constructions, two-points, and of course F-styles. The latter do have a special appeal to me, in a way, because of their long association with bluegrass in general and Monroe in particular. I think the over-ornate design, a relic of late-Victorian esthetics, has a distinctiveness that transcends its acoustic irrelevance.
But individual tastes and preferences are just that, and some people dislike things I like and vice versa. More power to them! My Mom used to say, "There's no accounting for tastes, as the old lady said when she kissed the cow." Where she got that, I dunno...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
Like instrument tops, veggies really pick up flavor when they’ve been torrified.
As a vegetable, Brussel sprouts are an A model, not an F model. Slice the Brussel sprouts in half vertically, throw them in a bowl with a bit of olive oil (and optional finely chopped garlic for an A-2 model), and then mix them around to coat them fairly evenly. Bake on a cookie sheet at 425 for 25 minutes. 😃

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
For F style, it doesn't even have to be bluegrass. Finnish mandolin master Heikki Lahti played an oval hole Gibson until he came across a 1980 Gibson F-5 while in Australia. The story goes that he called his wife and told her to sell the family car so he could buy the instrument. A friend ended up loaning him the money to buy it.
As to artichokes, no thanks. Will even eat kale though if it has enough bacon in it.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?
To go back to the original point, yup, I also think F’s can can be a bit uncomfortable with the points into one’s leg when sitting. Look cool though! I like A’s.

Clearly, the F-5 mandolin was not designed so that its lower point digs uncomfortably into your leg while seated playing. The obvious conclusion is that you are holding the instrument incorrectly. And the same goes for the OP, Gunnar. Those us who routinely play F-5 mandolins don't have this issue. So I'd say that the problem lies with the player, and not with the mandolin!
Why is this so hard to accept?

I just want the lap point! The scroll? Meh?

Such a well-moderated site! I do recall the white-face Rigel Q model. (Actually, who needs an arm rest I'll just put it on the other side with a nail sticking out of it! DIY baby!)
