interesting , a lot of work for a wall hanging though
that was very interesting and what little I heard at last the tone sounded fine, any other builds?
He'll definitely be the coolest kid in his violin class.
He pretty much defines VSO. Those ribs will crack like crazy after few humidity changes. I don't know what will happen to the thin plates with that figure and all the defects over time.
But makes nice wallhanger while it holds together.
Interesting. These sped-up videos make me more than a little nervous but that is just me.
He says he used regular wood glue instead of hide glue but I wonder why. He does say that he knows it will be more difficult to repair it. He also coats the inside with epoxy—maybe he knows what Adrian mentions above? And cutting out the ribs from one piece of wood sounds crazy to me. Oh well...
It is a violin shaped object. Anyone who knows how to make a violin sees a number of problems here. There are however, parts made, rough parts made for luthiers with CNC machines. (mostly rough cut necks with basic scroll shapes, also chin rests and some tailpieces).
Certainly more fun than carving olive wood by hand, no?
Question for you builders. When you use Ebony for a tail piece. Is the direction grain a factor ? Also whats the best glue to use for bonding two pieces of ebony together?
The violin build was interesting.
I couldn't help wondering why he used Olive wood for the top?... I can get making the back and sides, but does a hardwood like olive have any chance of having the tone of a spruce of other more standard tone woods.
The whole thing is just exercise in CNC wood cutting and assembly and likely sponsored but the CNC producer. He could as well create coffee table. Only the shape of the "object" resembles violin.
From violin making approach the thing is all wrong right from the start. The model he downloaded has completely wrong archings to start with the bad choice of woods etc... the gluing technique without any clamps with lots of white glue.
Pure VSO by definition as I told before.
