hi! im new here!
i just got this mandolin in a trade, and im wondering what kind of brand this is?
the guy told me that it was hand made in italy or spain and it has nothing on inside or ID nummbers.
but only the brand Y.T on it.
would love to know more about it!

Looks eastern European to me - possibly Romanian?
I was hoping one of the world instrument folks would be able to give us the actual name of the instrument. It has two double courses and two triple courses, 10 strings.
its prob a hybrid of some sort, looks a bit like a bouzouki. But it got extra strings. really wanna know what the deal is with this mandolin :)
It's not a mandolin (too many strings), nor a bouzouki (too many strings, too short a neck). I'm thinking it's some type of cittern. Or a custom-made ... whatever.
"Y T" probably refers to either the owner, perhaps the builder. Does not look like a brand name.
The instrument is a known type, we've had them here before. I just don't recall what they are. The brand name is another story.

The wide striped back and the amount of decoration on the face are very reminiscent of several instruments that I was able to examine close up a few years back. They were all supposed to be from the area around Paracho Mexico, and some were identified as such. I believe one of them was a Paracho Elite brand. They are a big name from that area but it has a reputation for having lots of luthiers. The instruments I saw included a Bajo Sexto and some mandolins. The mandos all had that same style back and I believe also the slotted headstock. I don't recognize the initials VT from anywhere.
Not necessarily Peruvian. This type is called a mandriola or Trichordia and it could well be be German or Sicilian made.
are they 12 strings? mine is only 10. maybe its a version on it.
Yes, often triple trebles and double bass strings, like yours,but sometimes all triples.
