Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
Just curious if any of you have seen the Watchhouse video on YouTube of the band playing Neil Young's "Harvest Moon." If you have, do you happen to know what mandolin that Andrew is playing on the song? It has such a rich, sweet sound and is a fine looking A-style instrument.
Happy Holidays to all!! ...Old Dog Dave

Good question. My first thought was a Givens, but the peghead throws me off a bit.
Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
I remember reading that it was a Givens kit assembled by an unknown builder, and you’re probably hearing a lot of Andrew’s hands in that video:

He sure has had an interesting MAS journey!

That’s an older Nugget he owns.
Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
Thats a different mandolin. The one in the "Harvest Moon" video has MOP inlayed in the peghead and a pickguard.

I didn’t realize that Watchhouse had released a more recent video of the song.

Well, your guesses are gonna be better than mine. I can read letters, but I don't know my squiggles. :(
It sure is a nice-sounding instrument. And it's a lovely tune. And let's not forget Emily, whose singing is perfect on this.
Andrew's a member; he may pipe up. And there may be some info at their website, youtube channel, etc. I couldn't see any info at the website, but maybe someone can dig deeper, or email him. I did learn they released their album on my birthday, so that's nice. :)
The camera angles and focus are in and out on the video. But just before the end, there's some clarity:

This and it sounds great. If I had as many nice mandolins as Andrew, I'd sound that good too... :whistling:
Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
Scott may know..if that's a Nugget it is a very early one. Jim from Colorado may know as well.

Thanks for posting that. I would have been there in person if I could have gotten all my ducks in a row for my vacation/festival tour/road trip last summer. I love that little festival; it's done well by me time and time again. But my heart had other plans for me, and there was no way any sort of adventure of the type was possible. But here at least is their set. :mandosmiley:

I'm sure someone who knows will chime in. Does have the Givens vibe, even down to the tailpiece.

Am I seeing it right that it is not a raised fretboard?

Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
Yup, he's playing the early Nugget he got from Danny Gotham.

I'm impressed by the pick damage below the strings. I believe that demonstrates some serious enthusiasm in your playing. ;)

I always wondered how that wear pattern happened directly under the strings. That happened before I owned that Nugget...and I no longer own it. It was a great instrument, but with its Doug Fir top it was outrageously bright...almost harsh tonally...and I decided to let her after about a year

From Danny Gotham's website:

Nugget A (#83, built by Mike Kemnitzer)
I met Mike around 1980 or thereabouts during one of my trips to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. At that point, I had an inexpensive F5 copy. I became smitten with Nuggets when I saw Tim O'Brien playing one at the festival. I ended up staying in touch with Mike, and sometime around 1985 he wrote to me to tell me that someone was trading up to a fancier A model, and he said I could get this for $750. It took me a year or so to pay it off. I had it for many years after. When I made the acquaintance of Andrew Marlin around 2010 or thereabouts, he quickly became obsessed with it. As his career started soaring, he soon had the resources to buy most anything he wanted. I resisted his repeated efforts to try and buy it from me. Around 2017, some health issues made me begin to think about the necessity of having a will, and that in turn made me think about what would ultimately happen with all of my instruments. To make a (very) long story short, Andrew is now the owner. As is the case with the Baird mandolin, I am at peace with the fact that it is now in the right hands.
Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"
Thanks, y'all. I love the sound of that mandolin on Watchhouse's "Harvest Moon"; and, of course, I have loved everything that Mandolin Orange/Watchhouse has done. Emily's voice on this song is about as good as it gets.
