I received my Ellis A4 Deluxe with the Hummingbird inlay yesterday and it is beautiful, a piece of art really. So well done. These pictures do not do it justice, I am not a photograph and I used my smartphone to take these pictures. The mandolin sounds so sweet. Thank you Tom, Pava, and the others at Ellis Mandolins for making me the prefect mandolin! Now, back to playing it. :)

Congrats! I've had my Ellis a4 for almost 3 years now. I'm still as happy with it as the day I bought it. I hope your A4 brings you the same amount of joy.

Does anyone know how long I should wait before putting on an armrest and tone-gard? I don't want to impact the finish until I'm certain the finish has hardened.

The beauty of Ellis' work speaks for itself. They are the best IMHO.

I'd wait a minimum of 6 months for the varnish to set up. Don't use polish until then either. Wipe off the with a soft cloth. Just enjoy it now and add that stuff later.

I was told by Tom to wait a year ,new varnish is soft and takes a long time to cure.
Enjoy the smell ,love that new varnish smell !

Wow, a whole year, I was thinking 6 months. If that is what it takes I'll wait a year. I clipped a Snark tuner to the very tip of the headstock when I received the mandolin to tune it up and after I removed the tuner I noticed a clouding of the finish where the Snark pads were. Yikes I thought; but, by the next day the clouding disappeared. I realized how soft the varnish was and needless to say I'm not attaching anything to the mandolin at this point.

I would say at least a year. Just play it and let the finish cure. I can't think of any builder that goes to more painstaking lengths to make a perfect-looking finish than Tom...
