A couple of new mandolins
A couple of recently completed mandolins. They are both based on Lyon and Healy mandolins of a century or so ago. The first is a flat back with a Brazilian rosewood body, recycled from a mandola I made years ago and decided I didn't like, with a carved Sitka soundboard. The second has a carved Tulip satinwood body and an Englemann soundboard and is a particularly responsive mandolin.

Re: A couple of new mandolins
Sweet! I am a big fan of the L&H styles. I really like the "folded over" position markers.
Re: A couple of new mandolins
Very good looking instruments - love twin point mandolins. What bracing scheme did you use?
Re: A couple of new mandolins
They're both very beautiful, Graham. I'm especially partial to the looks of the second one. I'd love to hear what it sounds like.
Re: A couple of new mandolins
Nice look on both! I think I hear them playing a duet. What about a finish?

Re: A couple of new mandolins
Bracing is an x brace on both, crossing about halfway between the bridge and sound hole. Finish is satin nitro in a rattle can from a German company called Wurth. The Tulip satinwood is with a prospective buyer, but may opt for another with a narrower nut. The Brazilian one is available, but being Brazilian rosewood with no documentation it will need to find a home in Australia. I will see what I can do about a sound file.
Cheers
Re: A couple of new mandolins
I think I'd like a mandolin with a zero fret.
Re: A couple of new mandolins
Love these! Seriously cool design of the side / fret markers.
Looking a your site I may want to order your F model. Is there any sound clips or video available of one online?

Not at the moment. My nephew in Sydney has the one on the website and I will ask him to record something.
Cheers
Re: A couple of new mandolins
Beautiful instruments Graham. I also like the fret markers . Is the neck a bolt on design as in your bouzouki book?
Re: A couple of new mandolins
Lovely both of them but i really like the second one. Yes, please upload some sound files if you would. I'd love to hear them!
Re: A couple of new mandolins

Dylan,
My nephew in Sydney, Jesse Johnston, who is a very clever and skilled musician recorded these two short tracks as parts of backings for songs (I think). It will give you can idea of what my F style mandolin sounds like.
I haven't had a chance to get anyone else to record anything on the two new ones as we are in a covid lockdown for the next couple of weeks and being asked to simply stay at home and not visit.
