Proof that not being played the mandolin should be in its case, not laying down on the sofa.
It was probably fairly far gone before his son sat on it judging by other aspects that one can see. I suppose it is a late 40s A50 and its tuners, tailpiece and bridge are worth more than $100. It's a shame the pickguard broke but there's not much left that is salvageable.
The tuners are the circa mid 40's with the glob of brass instead of a screw. The tailpiece is rough but could probably be used by someone. It's not worth $75.00 (current price plus shipping) to me but hey, it might be a project that someone would love. I agree with Nick and Charley.
I'd give $10 for that bridge. Love them bigwheels.
Who was his son; Andre the Giant? It was long gone before his kid sat on it.
Well, it's not nearly as bad as Bill's mandolin...Attachment 195894
‘We’ll, he was sitting in the drivers seat when he ran over it'
It's actually worse in at least a couple of ways.
-There is quite a bit of cross-grain fracture, much more than Bill's.
-Even if restored the value is barely a fraction of Bill's. The repair would cost so much more than the value of the instrument as to make repair unfeasible.
If I was teaching repair and I could get it for $10 or so I'd turn students loose on it.
And, there you have it, folks…
Yep. Just setting the record straight for those who aren't familiar with repair.
Maybe someone wants the neck, even though it is de-laminating at the peghead. Somebody who has got an A-50 with a busted neck might consider it worth the trouble to use the neck from this one if they can get it for $75 - $100.
Now that is a pancake mandolin. Or should I say flatiron? :whistling:
Up to $152.50 and 12 bids. Whodda thunk??

I am enjoying the fact that Sue is still looking at mandolins for sale. :)
Kids seem to be more heavy-weight nowadays...
I think someone found this at the dump, where it should have stayed.
The Titanic was intact until it hit the iceberg. Just perspective.
Sold! $182.50 +$25 shipping; 4 different people bidding!
I paid $204 for my Wards Model 1642 made by Gibson in 1936- it is an A5O but it has no truss rod. It needed one gear on the tuners and it looked a mess with a rotting pickguard and there was one crack on the top. My luthier made an exact repro of the guard, found a gear and glued the crack and it is a beauty. I found a "cloud" tailpiece cover and it came with its original strawboard case in good order. I thought $100 was the best this would make and one of the spindles for the tuners has a nasty bend in it- something that was done long before it was used as a cushion. It's amazing what stuff goes for on Bay, it seems!
This is the 1642- which have a lovely tone.

So are we expected to believe that sitting on a mandolin is not a good thing? What's next? Backing over your guitar in the driveway is not a good thing? Picking up your case without latching the latches is a bad thing? There's way too much of this sort of negative thinking rampant in today's culture.
