Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
Thought some of you might enjoy seeing some pics of the Nyberg come together. Lawrence is more well known for his CBOM instruments but agreed to take on a flattop mandolin project for me. Flamed claro walnut with a master grade cedar top. Here’s the top wood and the back coming together. More to come....

Coming together fast. Can’t wait to see that flamed walnut under finish. You can also follow along on the Nyberg Instruments Facebook and Instagram pages. :mandosmiley:

Looks nice. Walnut is one of my favorite woods for back and sides. This will be fun to watch!

Very nice Shaun. Can't wait to see the finished product. A friend had a Nyberg octave in the late 90s and I've wanted one since. Lawrence is the real deal.

Congratulations, Shaun! Can’t wait to see and hear the finished product. So cool to watch this come together. That walnut is insane!

Ready for some binding. My walnut mandolin will be bound in bloodwood. As you can see from the pics a few posts above Lawrence also incorporated that wood into the rosette. So much fun seeing a vision come together :mandosmiley:

Coming along nice. My Morris FT is walnut with a cedar top and it's wicked sweet. Yours looks like Brazilian style. Can't wait to hear. :mandosmiley:

Fretboard coming together.....

Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
Are the top and the back convex (curved- not carved)? or is it a true "flat top"?
-
Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
To my knowledge it’s a true flattop, definitely not carved. I’ll have to ask Lawrence if there’s any induced arching.
-
Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
I'm about 99% sure all "flattops" have some induced arch that is created by a slight curvature of the bracing. It's usually very slight. To my understanding, the arch is what counters the weight of the string tension. I am in the process of building my second now.
Shaun, this looks like it's going to be a BEAUTIFUL instrument! I love the fret makers! And I'm also a big fan of cedar tops. My SA has a cedar top.

Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
Those fret markers look awesome - can't wait to hear this when it's ready for action!

Re: Nyberg Flattop Mandolin Build Thread
Looking good. I think Cedar and walnut will be a nice combination. I really like wood bindings!

12’ radius on the top and about an 8’ radius on the back, induced by the bracing.
And thanks all. I’m really happy with how it’s coming together. Can’t wait to hear it! :mandosmiley:

How deep are the bodies? They look cavernous!
