Very nice! I love the false start and Nancy's look at the end. Too bad the video of Norman was off. They show him playing a simple D chord and the music is had these cool walking bass lines.
That would be a wonderful tune to learn to play. Anyone know anything about it?
Youtube identifies the tune as "Sagefields." I've heard it before but don't *think* they recorded it. (If they did record it, I hope someone knows where;I'd like to get a copy.) The tune sounds like a Nancy Blake original from the 1980s, something that would have fit nicely on her solo album, *Grand Junction*.
Thanks for posting the video. Great tune. It does sound like a Nancy tune, Randy. It's got her kind of twists and turns to it.
Nice sounding 3 point!!!
Two things that standout about that video:
1) Nancy is such an underrated/under-appreciated musician
2) That 3 pointer's Florida is scooped
I love the little ascending chromatic double-stop thing she does, I've heard them do that on tunes before, especially on the Original Underground Music album. She is certainly underrated. Her face at the end is priceless!
Her face at the end makes me thing that she wasn't happy with it and probably why it wasn't released. Too bad, It's a very cool tune.
She seemed to make that face a lot during their video Norman and Nancy Blake: My Dear Old Southern Home She seems to be such a fun character.
Wow! Brilliant. Thanks so much for posting.
I was struck by how much she varies her pick depth into the courses...Sometimes a brush, sometimes a shovel.
It gives her playing added color and extra dimension.
She's a gifted player for sure.
Great video, I'm loving that three-point. Norman and Nancy are both extremely talented, tasteful (well, except for that shirt), and they have an incredible instrument collection to boot!
Anyone know where I can find this video again? Looks as if it's private now. I really thought that it was a great tune.
Nancy makes a cameo appearance as the autoharp player that Llewyn Davis heckles in the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis."
Blake plays a 1934 Martin D-18H as his main guitar that is so rare that it may be the only one in existence.
Norman and Nancy Blake are two of the greatest acoustic folk musicians that were ever born.

I love the cafe for threads like this! Nancy is a great mandolin player and I think we say it more often!
The tune is called "Sage Fields," and the video footage is from the 1987 Central Sun Video VHS release "Planet Riders."
As far as I know, the tune has not been released anywhere else. Norman wrote it, and plays it just a little bit differently than Nancy does.
The 3 point F-2 and the D-18H were both sold many years ago. The guitar is once again for sale at Carter Vintage. Craig Hoffman, who is no longer with us, bought the mandolin. It's anybody's guess where it might be now.
Nuthin wrong with that shirt, and I concur it sounds like a Nancy original, IMHO she belongs with the great pickers of this era, as well as a gifted composer. Tunes like Fathers Hall, Peezlewhister, Belize, New Bicycle hornpipe, in Russia we have Parking lots to, Farewell to old Rufus, Grand Junction, my kind of fiddle tunes!
Her mandolin, cello, guitar fiddle and mandocello playing all have a unique presentation about them, it really sets her apart. as for that F2, Those Blakes have all the cool mandolins.
The only thing cooler than this tune and Nancy's playing (and Norman's) is that a gem like this from 2011 would pop back to the surface of the comments feed this morning.
Just wonderful. She has such a nice touch. Well done, Nancy. I love the Blake Mandolin instrumentals. They don’t sound like standard run of the mill fiddle tunes, with lots of speedy notes. They sound like Mandolin compositions, with flowing melodic lines. & I’m glad she played an oval, not a Loar.
