New prototype Celtic mandolin
Many of you will be familiar with my Celtic mandolins - they're pretty nice.

But they're also pretty big. For the last few years I've supplied them in a nice, affordable plywood case I used to buy from Germany. The case was actually a mandola case, but the fit was excellent. This year I ordered a box of the cases and when they turned up the design and shape was totally different. The company had switched suppliers and I couldn't get cases to fit. Bah.
All was not lost - I found a case the right size and had custom foam inserts laser cut to fit the mandolins. But this has meant a prettty big price increase on those lovely big Celtic mandolins of mine as the cases cost three times what they did.
So, I thought I'd go back to the old Sobell size Celtic mandolin and design one that would fit in a standard Hiscox case. I've just completed the body and have been testing it out to check the fit:

So pretty soon there should be a new addition to the range.
Stay tuned!

Beautiful. I have a Hiscox case. They are excellent, especially when traveling.

The Celtic mandolin is coming along nicely. It seems so little compared to my old Celtic mandolins, but it's not- it's a regular Sobell size.
The fretboard went on today, so she's nearly ready...

Just put the little prototype together today, and so far, I'm very happy with her. Loud, and woody. More so than your average Celtic style mandolin.

Great sound, as usual, Nigel. I love your laid-back approach to presenting your videos and talking about the instruments. Thanks for this latest.
Re: New prototype Celtic mandolin
Understated beauty and inspiring sound... Love it, Nigel.
Re: New prototype Celtic mandolin
Nice work, Nigel! Do you have any thoughts on a solid bridge vs. the usual adjustable pillar type - can you hear any reliable difference in the sound?
