Man 'headed for death' says he was saved by this
Most definitely worth watching. This is on CNN so I can't embed the video but it has a great message.
Luthiery, the art of creating stringed instruments, is changing lives in Hindman, Kentucky. It started with a master luthier and a man set on overcoming addictions.

Re: Man 'headed for death' says he was saved by this
The organization that took him in was The Appalachian School of Luthiery in Hindman, KY. When I read that story yesterday I tried to find out if there was a way to purchase instruments to support the organization. I never found that information. If someone has it could you post it?
Re: Man 'headed for death' says he was saved by this
The offshoot of the school, Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company, is slowly trying to build enough inventory to supply some dealers who have orders placed. Eventually, when enough instruments are made and ready for sale they will be available from a few dealers across the country. There may be some info on the Troublesome Creek site, and you can call Doug and ask about potential dealers. (If you call Doug you might want to prepare to be on the 'phone for a while :) )

The New York Times did a lengthy and well-written article on them several months ago. It's probably behind a paywall, but if you're a subscriber here's a link to the article.

I'm greatly inspired by programs such as these. There are many individuals in such circumstances who are helped through engagement with the arts. With the general state of progressively inadequate funding and resources applied to populations in need in the US, I'm gratified to see such efforts as these.
Several years ago I watched a doc on an arts-based project for homeless persons - a heavily stigmatized cohort - and was inspired to initiate a similar project in my own community. As predicted, it's highly effective.
Anyone with a given disposition, and a mandolin, can do great community work.

More proof that the arts save lives. Also proof that second chances can pay off.

I'd go to them for a uke! Sort of want to test those waters one day.
Such a great story. Way to go!
