Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
Cafe members,
I regret to inform you all that Dr. Phil Goodson, known around here as Philphool, has passed away after a strong battle with cancer.
In additional to being a well respected OBGYN Doctor, Phil was a good picker who caught and released many excellent instruments, but he was also just an outstanding guy. Extremely knowledgeable and always willing to share.
He always commented favorably but with a bit of a friendly rib on my "fancy" picking.
I hadn't had the chance to see Phil since Covid stopped our regular jam that we both attended. I sure wish I could pick one more with him! Rest easy my friend.
I will pick a little Greenville Trestle High, Nellie Kane and Tennessee 1949 for you!
Here is the link to a nice article on him:

Never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face just through the cafe postings, I will miss the fun banter he and I used to exchange, always good natured and intelligent!

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I met Phil at the Swannanoa Gathering a few years back, I really enjoyed getting to chat and sitting down and picking some tunes with him. A generous man who loved to share his passion for the music and his mandolins, I'll miss him. Rest in peace and condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear about Phil’s passing...

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I knew Phil from hanging around Wayne Henderson’s. We corresponded about mandolins, re-frets, and other things mandolin. We last emailed 2 weeks ago, and he shared his condition but hoped that he would live to vote this year—I’m sorry he won’t get to. Rest In Peace, Phil—our mandolin community has lost a great champion.

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I am always so sorry to hear this kind of news, and over 20 some years of running Forums I've seen my share. He changed his user name recently to Phil Goodson, and his last activity here was only a few days ago according to his Profile. May he rest in peace.

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
Very sad to hear of Phil’s passing. He would come to my shop for adjustments and fretwork on his mandolins and he would tell me about his family while I worked. He was one of the kindest and gentlest men I’ve ever met and he treated everyone with respect. I’ll miss his visits. My condolences to his family.

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I met and picked with Phil one time, at a High Lonesome Strings jam in the G'boro area, I remember Bob Altman was there with some mandolins that Phil and I ogled over. He was a kind, humble soul.
May he R.I.P.

I shared a week-long class with Phil at Augusta and enjoyed his companionship and picking. We chatted through the cafe after that once in a while and I always enjoyed his posts. Very sorry to hear it and my thoughts go out to his family.

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I am very sorry to learn of Phil's passing. While we have a great community here overall, he always seemed to me to standout as a really and truly nice guy even in this crowd of good people. In marking his passing, I feel as though it is important to tell all my Cafe friends how much I appreciate each and every one of you. We never know who we will be missing next, so it's important to say it while we can. Phil will be sorely missed and I wish all the best for his family. I hope they know how much he meant to us who only knew him here.

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I'd like to add to this post the response that I received from Phil's daughter Becca when I sent her the link to this thread. Thank you all for your comments!
"Oh Drew, this means the world to me. I knew he was active on your forums, but not being a picker, never witnessed it myself. I’m glad to see that he made an impression of grace and kindness; he valued the musical community so much. Please tell everyone how very much he loved all of you, and how much we appreciate everyone’s kindness. Maybe encourage everyone to play a song for him, I know he’ll hear it where he is."

Re: Philphool, Phil Goodson, passes :(
I first met Phil thru the Cafe and then in person at Steve Kaufman Camp back in 05. Since then we attended more Kaufman Camps, Augusta Heritage Bluegrass Weeks, Swanannoa Gatherings, and Pete Wernick Jam camps. Phil never had a cross word to say about anything. He was always upbeat and encouraging to anyone new or struggling with their instrument. Heck, I never saw the man with anything but a smile on his face. The music community has lost a true friend with the passing of Dr. Philip Goodson. The world needs more Phil Goodsons. RIP brother Phil. The circle seems broken and empty with your passing.
