Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
Like a lot of the others might pick #5 or #1 first. Even though #6 has the least amount of treble emphasis, I do like the overall tone.
Definitely a nice comparison. Not a bad one in the bunch by any means.

Number 4, followed by number 1.
Great work on your part!

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
I’m most curious which was x braced, in the past I have almost always preferred the sound of an x braced mandolin.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
The suspense is killing me :)
I've listened on an iPhone, ear buds and over ear headphones and I keep picking #2 every time. #3, #5, #1 are close behind.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
I listened with a decent pair of headphones. I do like the fact that they all were played by the same player with the same strings and pick. sure some mandolins may prefer a certain string or pick. But this made put them all on ever playing field. There are subtle differences between them but they are all are good sounding mandolins. What it proved to me was it is the player. As long as a good player has good mandolin they will get a lot out of the instrument and sound fairly similar what ever they play. thank you for taking the time to do this. Time to go practice.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
6 4 1
6 for depth of tone
4 for clean sound
1 for brightness
If I were buying, it would probably be 4 because that's the type of sound I prefer.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
I have listened to this way too many times but one thing I wish I would have the first time through was to listen without watching the numbers flash on the screen then see if could tell how many mandolins were played. There are a couple close enough that the first time through I think my guess as to the number of mandolins played would have been four. After listening to this only God knows how many times I can tell more easily now but the first time through I don't think I would have guessed six.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
After a couple times through, I think #6 does it for me. But, I don’t know if it’s what I would pick if I was a bluegrass player. However, #6 seemed well balanced and had a bit of growl that I love in ITM.

Thanks for giving your input!! I'll try to give the "reveal" soon... want to leave enough time for people who care to listen and give their input to be able to do so.
thanks,

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
Tough! I like the lot and really like a few a few. Here's my order: 1 > 3 > 2 > 4 > 5 > 6 though I'm almost positive that I'd reorder upon a second listen. My guess is the no. 1 is either the LL or the Fern. But I'm rooting for the Buckeye! Thanks for putting this together. Super fun.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
You may remember https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/c...-Acoustic-Disc. That was a difficult one. I was sooo wrong with my guesses then. I do not know if the soundfiles are still out somewhere. If so, I didnīt find them.
That is why I withheld my guesses here also. But the rythm playing in the background, the reverb or whatever was done to enhance the listening experience did make it even more difficult, I think.
Looking forward to the reveal though. Also, nice playing.

Thanks for listening!! I have added a sound file with just the mandolins playing the lead and the "chop" mandolin removed... there is a link to the file in the video description now.. check it out and see if that makes it any easier.
thanks

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
Listened to the sound file. This is a great sampling of mandolins. Very diverse group of builders. It really demonstrates how much influence the mandolin player has on the overall tone. All though there are slight differences in the sound, they are all very close. Great stuff Gabriel. Thanks again for putting it together.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
1 and 3 had the special sauce for my ears. Listening on a nice reference system.
All were nice pro quality sounding, not a slouch in the bunch.

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
I liked #4 best, with #1 and #6 close. #4 and #1 each sounded a bit 'dry' to me, which I liked.
And 3,2,5 are all tied.
They are all lovely sounding and the playing was great. thanks so much

Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled
I'm so far from having any idea of what a "perfect" mandolin should sound like, this was just a fun listening exercise for me. All of them sounded like an instrument I should not be allowed near :).
I'm fairly sure it would depend on the player and what they wanted to do with a particular instrument - solo recording, bluegrass, jazz, whatever, because, just by the names there, they'd all likely find a loving home (if they don't already have one!).
I tended to like what I am guessing is the "woodier" sound of 2 and then 1, but I've got "+" signs next to all of them on different passes with different headphones. Color me clueless as to which was which and really looking forward to being enlightened.
