Pettine method part VI on Google Books
I noticed that Google Books have made available a scan of a 1907 copy of Modern mandolin school, part VI by Giuseppe Pettine.
It's the 84 page section snappily titled:
"Modern System Of The Plectrum's Mechanism"
Attachment 202264
I'm not a Google books user so haven't checked out the quality of the scanning.

The scan is pretty decent...and I'm trying to figure out how to download it, not just read it online.
thanks.

Not of much use if you’re not apart of the Googleplex.

Re: Pettine method part VI on Google Books
You're right. I guess my next approach might be to take screenshots of each page, crop and paste them into a page layout program and then export to pdf. Sounds time consuming.
I really don't like e-books, though. Give me paper all day long.
Re: Pettine method part VI on Google Books
I believe that the descendants of the Pettine family still have copies of these books for sale. Someone asked me about these fairly recently. Contact the Providence Mandolin Orchestra. Bob Margo who is an active MC member is active in that group and I believe knows who has them for sale.

If you have a Google account, login. Get to the page where you can read the document.
If you are using Safari browser, click File, export to PDF. The entire file downloads.
If you do the "ifs," it couldn't be easier.
Other browsers might have export or use the "save/save as" option.

Well I signed in, and as I said in my earlier post, there is no export option on this item.Attachment 202362
Perhaps your browser works differently.
Re: Pettine method part VI on Google Books
From what I understand Google do not add all options to every file. Some items are treated like a library, where one person can book the item out but it's only on-line reading etc. & others have to add it to their wish-list( similar to reserving a book at the library) Perhaps if the copy came from a library they have to treat it differently? I'm not a user so just speculation. However if the books from the later print are available via PMO that might be something to consider, once people have had a chance to have a look at the older edition. I'd imagine there must have been a few corrections & edits between the two.
Re: Pettine method part VI on Google Books
I apologize for saying it was easy to download the document. Even with the Safari browser on a Mac, the "export to PDF" only allows you to get one page at a time. I think that is a Google Books limitation.

The Providence Mandolin Orchestra owns (for many years) a box of NOS (new old stock) of the 1967 reprint. To answer Beanzy's question, as best as can be determined, the 1967 reprint is of the 1907 edition. We have decided to sell off some of our stock to raise funds for the PMO (i.e. to replace financial assets lost during the pandemic, when we were not playing concerts), which I hope people will regard as a good cause. Persons attending the CMSA convention this September in Kalamazoo will be able to order on-site, either the six-volume method (this is Part I - Part VI (the Plectrum Mechanism) & the Duo Primer, but not "Fundamentals for Children") at a discount or individual volumes (subject to availability). After the CMSA convention I will post contact information in the Cafe Classifieds.
Re: Pettine method part VI on Google Books
Thanks, Bob. I couldn't remember the details but I am glad you are doing that. PMO is one of the best and most forward-thinking mandolin orchestras out there.
I know many people know this already but the Pettine Method is one of the very best of the older methods.
