Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
These might be hard to find, but they are my favorites:
"Little River Stomp" by the Buckhannon Brothers
"Old Time Mandolin Music" by Clyde Curley and the Oxymorons
"Mandolin the Cow Camp" by Skip Gorman
"Strings Attached" by Mick Maloney
"Traditional Fiddle Tunes" by Harry Liedstrand, Cary Lung, David Green

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Lately..... Darol Anger's "E-and-a"..... Joe Walsh' mandolin playing is sublime....lots of space. The melody is always present but leaving spaces reminds me of Clarence White's syncopation. Darol has a real talent (well many).... for the arrangements, and while not as edgy as a lot of his work, " E-and-a" is a real keeper. Tunes like Farewell to Trion, Denver Belle, John Arcand's Grey Owl, and John Hartford's Homer the Roamer are really alive. Courtney Hartman's guitar playing is understated magic!

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Thank you all for your input as this has reminded me of many of my old listening interests and introduced me to new. It is nice to see the broad spectrum of genres indicative of the varied mandolin brotherhood that participate on Mandolin Cafe.
So often people automatically assume that as a mandolin player I play Bluegrass. I usually tell them that I know only a small handfull of Bluegrass tunes which then they ask with dismay, "what do you play?".

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Mike Marshall and Chris Thile “Live Duets” is pretty awesome.
-
Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Tim O’Brien- “Red on Blonde”

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Rising Fawn String Ensemble's "Original Underground Music from the Mysterious South". Norman Blake and ensemble. Dave Appollon's compilation which David Grisman put to market.
These two stand out for me.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
It would be remiss not to mention "Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza" Ronnie McCoury, Sam Bush, Buck White, Bobby Osborne, Jessie McReynolds, Ricky Skaggs, Frank Wakefield & Del McCoury.
& the "Mandolin Duets Vol 1" project by Casey Campbell w Buck White, Ronnie McCoury, Mike Compton, Bobby Osborne, Tim O'Brien, David Grisman, Roland White, Ricky Skaggs, Andy Statman, Sam Bush, Roland White.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Camptown by Joe Craven (1995). To say he is a multi-instrumentalist would be an understatement
-
Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Anything by Don Steirnberg (On any instrument ... i just heard him on tenor banjo. Wow!) Anything by Kenneth 'Jethro' Burns. Skip Gorman's 'Mandolin in Cow Camp'. Anything by Rich DelGroso, Dave Surrette and Peter Ostroushko. I could live with just that group ... but i certainly appreciate the rest in all genres.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Great suggestions so far. Glad someone mentioned the Buckhannon Brothers. Very underrated IMO. Want to add -
FDS-701 - Norman, Tut, Sam, Butch, Vassar, David, Jethro
Norman and Nancy Blake - Natasha's Waltz. Compilation of Rising Fawn String Ensemble music.
Peter Ostroushko - The Mando Chronicles
Heikki Lahti - Mandoliinimestari
Al Reko and Oren Tikkanen - Volumes 1 and 2. These are CD compilations of 4 records they put out. Really helped bring back Finnish music in the US. Oren plays excellent mandolin.
Anything by the Indian Creek Delta Boys.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
There's a lot of good mando albums out there, but the ones that made me want to play mandolin were the early Ry Cooder recordings.
Maybe I'm dating myself. (Actually, I've long been at an age/appearance level that leaves me invisible to beautiful women. So I'd certainly be dating myself. (Sigh.))

I’m really digging Road Trip. By John Reischman and John Miller right now. Lots of tasty mandolin playing on that album.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
[QUOTE=tmsweeney;1783099] I agree with Northwest Steve about Reischman, his playing on The Tony Rice Unit's "Backwaters" is exceptional and I think influenced a lot of today's hot pickers. /QUOTE]
Including me. I was in the States in late 1983, and seemed to be aware at the time of a huge wave of what I think was known as 'New Acoustic Music'. I picked up a number of LPs including Backwaters by Tony Rice, Markology by Mark O'Connor and Quintet 80 by Grisman.
I found this music really exciting. It was rooted in bluegrass, I suppose, but was really forward looking and sometimes very jazzy (particularly Rice) and featured incredible playing and musicianship. A golden age, I would say.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Morning Sky by Chris Hillman was a good album- when he went back to acoustic music. Here he does the title track live with Al Perkins, who produced the album, Jerry Scheff and Bernie Leadon- not a great quality video but well worth watching. I saw this band- minus Jerry live in the early 80s- I think Bill Bryson played bass instead- a fabulous concert and as Bernie said- just a mile from Olympic Studios where he had recorded ten odd years earlier.

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Nickel Creek - A Dotted Line has been listed to a lot lately around here...and maybe not an "album", but give Chris Thile's cover of Gillian Welch's "Hard Times" a listen to...pretty amazing...

Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?
Thanks for the Evan Marshall mention. After seeing him perform the William Tell Overture in a casual woods setting from about 3 feet away from that beautiful blonde mandolin, my expectations were never the same. I feel he doesn't get his due. He also turned out to be a very generous, kind and humble guy to talk to.

Bela Fleck - Tales from the acoustic planet. Still remember hearing it for the first time when I was about 15 and having my mind permanently warped.
