Tracks? Are we gonna start talking trains now? :disbelief:
Let's just say the road we were on took a turn, and leave it at that. :whistling:
Ya know, it's all metaphorical ... somehow ... ;)
We used to drive old, stripped down Bugs around in the mountains, sometimes on railroad tracks if there was nowhere else. You'd eat a lot of bugs with no wind shield.
I understand that. Culled two when the opportunity to obtain the Northfield arose. Probably still have too many, but am unable to emotionally get rid of any more.
Also went through something similar with acoustic guitars. Used to buy to have. Now, it's buy because of a need. And haven't had a need in a while.
You can live with out your wants. You cannot live without your needs. By that I guess I don't need any instruments, but my... life would be drab.
I had a discussion once with someone at a party. They thought it was foolish, almost insane to spend $3k on a guitar. Then they excused themselves, saying they needed to get home, and I watched as they drove off in a $85k car. You have to love the absurdity of peoples’ minds.
Was one if them sporting a $30K diamond ring?
I cull mine pretty regularly, and since I spotted a Mandolin I been chasing a few years there will be a few very nice mandolins in the classified.
That's assuming my road trip is a success.
Best...................
Tony, I completely understand what you are saying and support your decision as a fellow mandolin player. I have reduced my total number of instruments overall, including both mandolins and guitars, and this has allowed me to eventually determine what music I want to prioritize playing and how I wish to devote my time practicing. I wish you success with your sale, whatever you determine. Best, Dan
Well, after about 40 years of buying and selling, sort of have an idea. Doesn't always work out that way, though. Last acoustic guitar purchase was a need to plug in for a few shows and a need for a smaller body guitar.
Now, mandolin, that's still more emotion than anything.
It’s hard to let these things go. I’m closing in on my 69th birthday with more instruments than an old geezer should have. Cars 🚘 are easy to move on from but instruments have a soul..... I think.
I love acoustic instruments and look almost daily at the Classifieds, CL, GC used, etc, but I find it distracting to own too many. For me it takes the focus off the music I'm playing and makes it about the instrument. If somethings sounds good on one guitar (par example), I'll keep wondering what it would sound like on another one. Same goes for mandolin. If I owned a room full of mandolins, I think I'd go crazy switching around trying tunes on different ones, trying new strings, picks, etc, etc.
On my way to Carter's. Played this baby one more time before leaving. I'm know I am doing the right thing, but it still makes me sad.
It can be very hard to see a mandolin you love leave you. I have been blessed to have some exquisite instruments, both mandolin and guitar, but just about the time I get what I want, another surgery pokes its head out and laughs at me. After 23 surgeries and numerous hospitalizations, I feel blessed to have anything left. For some reason the doctors and hospitals and all the other relative expenses must be paid. I would love to have a couple of them back, or just one. Life often dictates the turns we take. I am not complaining. I am merely stating a reality. I am thankful I was able to take care of the things that had to be. After all, it's just wood and strings. But what a wonderful pile of lumber in a good mandolin.
Good to see you posting, Joe. I hope you're doing well despite all the surgeries. Hang in there.
I feel ya Big Joe. I am in a different but similar place with overwhelming medical issues. It does clarify what we truly prioritize. Hang in there.
