Gibson Ricky Skaggs Distressed Master Model - My New Mandolin
I have been wanting a Gibson Distressed mandolin for some time and just waiting on the right one to come along. I know this is not the regular Distressed model, but the Ricky Skaggs Distressed. As far as I know, this one hasn't been documented in the registry being kept on Facebook. When I purchased this RSDMM, I was told it was was from a collector that had purchased this one new and then just placed in his vast instrument collection.
This is #6 of 30. It isn't over-the-top distressed, but is distressed just right I think. It surely has the feel and tone of an instrument that is 80 years old. It also has a one-piece back and side-bound with old style flowerpot. It was signed on June 19, 2007.
Below are some pictures of RSDMM #6.

That it for now. I'm really happy with this mandolin so far and after a couple days getting a feel for the thin neck, I'm sold on it's comfort and playability. When I pick up one of my other mandolins, the neck feels like a baseball bat. :)

Beautiful instrument! I agree with your opinion about the right amount of distressing. I'd prefer that over the recent ones made to look like 73987. Looks perfect. Congratulations.

Looking good!
I had the opportunity to play a DMM and a RSDMM years ago at IBMA and they were really, really good. I recall the neck was quite small, but it still felt super solid. I’d own one in a heartbeat if I had the funds.
Congrats!

Thanks Kevin. I guess the neck would be an individual thing. I'll say it's the thinnest neck I've played and at first, I was like 50/50 if I liked it or not. However, after a few days, it really started feeling very natural and comfortable. I've only had this mandolin about 10 days, but I've grown very fond of the neck feel and size. I think it's helped my pinky reach just a little as well. :) Also, so far, no ill effects of cramps or anything like that.

Yeah, man! I think I’d grow used to that comfy neck real quick!

Us DMM or RSDMM owners are few. I like this one a lot. It's got the tit on the T logo, reverse binding and one piece back of highly figured maple. I've found the thin neck to be like those of the Dec. batch of Loars. It does take a bit to get use to. It's one of the few mandolins I have I don't worry about getting a little nick or scratch on. Has it been determined if all 30 of the RSDMM have been made yet?

That is really sweet, very tastefully done.

This RSDMM looks fantastic! Was this one signed by Danny Roberts? The neck looks really close to my Dec.1st 24! Was this the one Carters had for awhile? I love the open G on these, well also on any of the newer/older Loars/Ferns and such. I like the looks so much better than the closed G but sure wouldn't balk at any if they had the closed G! Perfect looking mandolin to me, the wood choice, side binding, overall build is sweet! How does the RSDMM compare in sound to other DMM's? I imagine they all are fairly close correct? I also love the hand engraved Waverly tuners! They are so much nicer than the later CNC Waverly's! Its a real bummer they went to CNC! Nothing quite like the hand engraved examples plus the CNC have wider back plates!

The highest number I have been able to verify is #27. I'm working on compiling a list of known RSDMM with pictures and general information if available. So far I have some information on #2, #4, #5, #6, #7, #9, #12, #13, #14, #19 and #27. If anyone has any information on any of the RSDMM, please let me know.

To my ear, it sounds fantastic. This mandolin was purchased new in 2007 and then promptly placed in a collection, so it hasn't had much play time. However, I'll change that. :) It'll get played every day with me and it will be interesting to see how it develops. However, it must sound good at the start as well and this one does. It's very reminiscent of the Loar sound. Very throaty and sort of grunts but with a mid-range that will peel paint. Also a very strong E string, playing Pee Wee Lambert's Angel Band break in the high C position just shatters glass. It's really one of the best sounding mandolins I've heard and the playability is just like putting on an old pair of comfortable jeans. This one is a keeper.

This one is only signed by Ricky Skaggs. From what I was told, this one was purchased new in 2007 and placed in a collection until recently when the owner decided to sell off some of his instruments. I was fortunate enough to purchase it from the retailer the collector had consigned them to. I've played 2 regular DMM's and I'll have to say they both sounded top notch and I would've been happy with either. That's been a few years back, but this one, to my ear, sounds at least as good as those I played with maybe a little better E string.

A beautiful looking mandolin. And what amazingly well done aging. Does look to be a very special instrument. Glad it's out of a closet collection and into the hands of a player. Enjoy.

Love the look of that one. Also a big fan of slim/slender necks. So fast and easy to get around on.
Didn't Ricky sand down a neck on a 20's Gibson till he exposed the truss rod? Seems like I heard that story before.

Beautiful! I'd love a mandolin with a thin neck as I came from fiddle. Got any videos?

Yes Ricky I believe did this to the Loar F-5 he played in the mid 70's with JD Crowe! I bet that was a "NOOOOoooooooooooooo" moment!

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was a Loar or Fern. Did that one get repaired or is it still like that?
