Bach Mandocello arrangements newly found
I found mandocello-friendly arrangements of a couple Bach violin solos--a loure and an allemande arranged for bass viola da gamba. After downloading from imslp, remember to scroll down to the BASS parts:

Re: Bach Mandocello arrangements newly found
This looks very interesting, and the editor--Dick Yates--has quite a bit to say about plucked vs. bowed as well as transcribing to an instrument with different tunings. I would like to mention this in my CMSA Mandocellos in the 21st Century workshop, but first I will check with Mr. Yates about copyright and permission. IMSLP has that disclaimer about this, and I do not see a copyright notice, but I want to be respectful and responsible.
Thank you inangaman for bringing this to MC players' attention!

Thank you, Jim Imhoff, for your remarks, which alert me to be more mindful of copyrights. Harmon Gladding--inangaman
Re: Bach Mandocello arrangements newly found
Good news Harmon--I did check with Dick Yates and I am happy to say I will include his carefully done editions in my Mandocello session at CMSA. There is some interesting new music written for the instrument, and that will be the main focus, but I also want to include music that gives us mandocello players something of value to work on outside the typical orchestral parts. There are quite a few videos of people playing the Bach cello suites on mandocello, which suggests people are looking for great music for a great instrument.
The convention will be virtual, so I hope the non-travel opens the possibility for more people to attend. As several people stated in another thread, last year's online event was quite successful.
Re: Bach Mandocello arrangements newly found
I'm curious how the Yates' viola da gamba arrangement is transposed or adapted for mandocello. I didn't even think they shared the same range. Do they? (too lazy to google it) Thanks.
Re: Bach Mandocello arrangements newly found
He talks about that in the notes--check out the file and you'll see.

I haven't looked at the notes to which Jim refers, but the six-string incarnation of bass viola da gamba is typically tuned D, G, c, e, a, d' where violoncello/mandoloncello/mando-cello, of course, is C, G, d, a. Thus, typical bass viol range (seven-string instruments to A1 are exceptions) is contained within cello (with an extra whole step for good measure, assuming one is willing to work higher up the fingerboard).
Transcribing Bach's bowed-string solos (all originally for fifth-tuned instruments) to viol tuning intervals (mostly in fourths) is complicated by changing the intervalic relationships among strings. I wonder if it might be better to simply transpose the originals and work towards workable fingerings from there.
Or maybe I should just visit IMSLP and read those notes.
