    1909 Gibson mandolin

I had this nice old mandolin on the bench this week. A little work and she’s ready to go. A sweet sounding mandolin. It looks like Gibson added a decal to the peg head or it was re-necked. It doesn’t...

    Re: Herschel Sizemore passes

So sad. He was a one of a kind. I always loved his music. You could tell it was him playing on a recording without even looking at the liner notes.
    RIP Herschel.

    Re: Tailpiece angle adjustment

Yes, they can move just enough to not close properly. Iíve seen a few that way. I would remove the tailpiece to prevent any kind of damage to the mandolin before bending it. It usually only takes a...

Sorry to see that happened. I recently repaired a cracked top from the same shipping situation.
I think if they see something designated as “Fragile”, that means throw it harder.
  10. Re: 'Leading Off' - Chris Thile Transcription Book

Jake, you do a lot of generous wonderful work. Thank you for that! Chris’ book is out of print. That is very generous of you. What I would like to see is some of Dempsey Young’s work on mandolin....

Re: What's the best way to dust my fretboard?

To be better specific, I use an old handkerchief. It’s very thin.

Just take a rag and slide it between the frets and the strings.

    Re: replacing Flatiron tail piece?

Sam, I think the one sold at Greg Boyd’s are plated brass. It doesn’t take much to fit a cover. Also beeswax also works well to help keep a cover on.

The stamped tailpiece can be bought ay many placed online. E-bay, Greg Boyd's, Stew-mac, etc. The sides of your cover can be adjusted to fit the replacement.

    Re: Tunes in "F"

I really enjoyed your tune. Nice and bluesy. Fishers Hornpipe was usually played by fiddlers in the key of F. I tabbed out a mandolin version years ago. It lays out very nicely in F.

Re: In honor of Bill's mandolins bday

That's a good question. The binding certainly doesn't look like the normal side binding. The black line seems wider and is in the center of the binding instead of closer to the sides.
