Heard them on NPR Live from here. I like the Mandolin Orange mando sound better than Thile's, who has a bit of a precious sound for lack of a better word.
Let me know if you get a hold of him. Would love to hear from him again, and may have some work for him if he is available. I once had a chance to audition one of his fiddles, and it was great. Up...
This is a good question. He has worked on my violins, mandolin and bows now for over 20 years. I needed some luthier work done about a year ago, but I was not able to contact him. I have been to his...
I would venture to guess the M300 pickup in this vid was not used with a preamp, or at least a good quality one, as the pickup sound is quite thin, and that is not what I am experiencing with mine. A...
In that video it seems like the Fishman is not going through a good preamp, the sound is thin. It can sound much better than that with a properly matched preamp, even without a mic.
I use one without a mic, and it is hands down the best pickup I have used on mando in a loud band context. Nothing else even comes close, although you do need a good preamp. I can see a mic giving it...
You could also look at an F-style Kentucky KM-1000 in the used range. I got one a few years ago, and this is truly a bluegrass mandolin. I am also a long time fiddler who doubles on mandolin, and the...
I second that, better mandolins are going to have more power in the high end, as well as the low. The same is true for better fiddles/violins--they just have that power and ringing sound even in the...
Cool. I'm planning on getting some for my KM-1000. I have a set of J74s that I might put on now, as the ones on there are old, but then I will order some Elixirs.
Has anyone used the Elixir mediums on a Kentucky KM-1000? That is what I am looking to use them on.
I am talking about the D'Addario EXP74 medium. Of course, this is under my hands and in humid summertime conditions.
The D'addario's lose tone pretty quickly and oxidize. I do like the louder, clearer tone of new strings, so I would probably like the Elixirs, which is why I liked them on guitar.
I used to use Elixir on my electric and acoustic guitars. Never thought about them for mandolin. I may have to try them!
In German, some of those wood figures are called "Haselficht", and can be indicative of good quality tone wood. In this country, we often call it bear claw, in other cases, it can be considered...
A pass for sure.
A few years ago, I bought a Kentucky KM-1000 used for $800, and it has been a good one.
I use the Hercules stand that you just set the mandolin down in. You do have to be careful not to knock over, but it is very sturdy, and I have never had any problems. Just put it somewhere that...
The Korg custom pedals have a great visual display, and are very accurate. I use a hand held one for home and studio, and it is extremely accurate and easy to tune.
The TC Polytune is a VERY good foot pedal tuner anyway you strike it. A good second to this would be the Korg Pitchblack Custom. Also very good.
I am using the TC Electronics Polytune 2 on my fiddle/mandolin pedal board, and it works great. Polytune feature doesn't really work well other than with guitar, but the tuner is very sensitive and...
The Kentucky mandolins can sound really good at the price range. Just enjoy it!
I would look at a strict clean boost, like the Fire Eye Bright Eye, or if you need a DI, the Red Eye preamp pedal. Small format, plenty of boost, done.
The Fishman is the deal. You might be able to get away with the M200, but it may have a "drier" sound. The M300 has the pickup mounted in the bottom of the bridge so it still gets some body...
Yep, that's the other thing about the Red Eye--flexibility. I have played on stages with ample phantom power, and I have played with none. I have played when my battery died and we had phantom. I...
