    Re: Wood Anatomy

I don't want to go too far down the rabbit hole here, and I have no scientific input to offer. But, as a fiddler first, I've had the pleasure of playing many different instruments of different ages...

Re: Bluegrass Mandolin for a Newbie

Eastman or Kentucky tend to be the better bets in that price point. Some feel that Kentuckys have more of the "traditional" Gibsonesque sound and the Eastmans more "modern". Some Eastmans are...

Re: The Japanese - Irish connection

Definitely, she's very talented. And I do love the fiddle and concertina as a duet form.

Re: How many of you play 3rd-less chords?

Speaking for myself, I prefer my Irish trad served guitar-less. Mainly for this reason.

Re: Chords and double stops in Trad

On a pedantic level, the term "pure drop" means a truly traditional form in ITM parlance, which means only melody instruments since accompaniment by chording instruments is a later 20th century...

Re: How many of you play 3rd-less chords?

I'm not the best w/ chord theory and whatnot (when it comes to trad, I'm mainly playing the fiddle), but I would say that that I agree with the idea of not always playing the 3rd or all notes of the...

    Re: Girouard A4 build thread.

Beautiful wood! I've had the Girouards on my short list for if and when I would be able to get a bench-made mando (looking less and less likely sadly). Looking forward to seeing finished pictures.

    Re: Quebec jigs

I was just about to recommend checking out Andre Brunet! However, he doesn't always play 6/8 tunes in the same pattern though. For that matter, neither do all Irish players. Jig bowing doesn't fit...

Excellent work. This is a great project. And likewise, one of my favorite albums and versions of this song.

    Re: Humidity

It depends on where you live. here in Maine, especially in a cold snap, you can easily end up with 15% RH in a room. After a few days, that will start wreaking havoc on your stuff, especially fiddles.

Re: 17 fret Irish Tenor Banjo vs mandolin

I understood what you meant and wasn't trying to be too pedantic, just pointing the layer of evolution that made those pipes distinctly Irish vs some of their distant cousins. Most other pipers are...

Re: 17 fret Irish Tenor Banjo vs mandolin

More like manufacturers claiming that for marketing purposes. In the Irish music world they're just banjos and bouzoukis. I've never heard an Irish player put "Irish" in front of their banjo or...

Re: Tips for chording with a hard(ish) pick?

I would add to the good advice already posted here with the following: when chopping, don't be afraid to let things ring just a hair, and not always be all dry and purely percussive. This makes both...

Re: Single Note Melody - Is mandolin "easier?"

I think I did. It's a rabbit hole to dive into the minutiae of what makes a good Irish tune and the proclivities of Irish musicians. If someone likes the tune, that's no biggie to me, but it's...

Re: Single Note Melody - Is mandolin "easier?"

Admittedly, it's subjective. However, if you were to poll a cross-section of Irish musicians I can almost guarantee that you'd get a lot of eye rolls at the mention of that tune. Plus, it's English...

It also might be due to the fact that it's just an awful tune.

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

It's already been said, but for that price point I'd go with the Bobelock. They're not fiberglass but the wood is actually better protection and a more stable micro-climate for the instruments. My...

I spent some time yesterday covering the first aid station at our local festival's pre-festival string camp. Sadly, I had to back out of attending the camp, but am volunteering on the medical side. I...
  24. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

It all depends on what you want out of it, and sometimes it's serendipitous. For myself, my $1000 Kentucky KM-756 is all I will ever need. It was an over-budget impulse buy, but it's well-made and...
  25. Re: Any atheist / agnostic Bluegrasser's out there?

    Vitriol? Hardly.
What they're trying to explain to you is that we're here to talk about mandolins and music. That's it. The topic has no place here. It has nothing to do with anyones' opinion...
