Would you consider a ukulele tuned like a mandolin (GDAE)? It might be easier for an 11 year old to start on 4 single strings until he can develop the finger strength and dexterity to handle 4 paired...

Get a metronome and practice with that. I use an electronic one with about 24 tempos and a small light that flashes to the beat; I have found that to be invaluable in cleaning up my playing. I'll...
