  1. Advice on websites for acoustic cover band

I'm done with Facebook and would like to set up a website for our acoustic cover band. (My mando is the main lead instrument.) I want a domain name and don't expect, for that reason, to go with any...

    Re: Beatles tunes

My band, Mississippi Crossing, does "And Your Bird Can Sing." Here's a cover. I do the guitar lead on mando. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPAtGpU_xY8

I think I won't be integrating that one into our song lists for gigs--but thanks!

Thanks for that. They seem to be popular in Poland. I wish I understood their lyrics.

Powergrass does "Blue Night" fro Poland

I know there's a lot of great bluegrass played in Eastern Europe, and this probably is disqualified for abouit five different reasons, but it's interesting how this Monroe tune travelled to Poland....
  7. Re: Some questions about optional features on mandolins:

Just a word of thanks to all who have responded. It has helped me evaluate what I want to prioritize--and not prioritize. BTW, my arthritis so far is mild and limited to the right (pick) hand, but...
  8. Re: Some questions about optional features on mandolins:

Thanks, Ranald and Chuck. Ranald, I too have a Godin A8, which I play in my cover band. I like its versatility. Chuck, you're right on the St. Louis scene. Music Folk and Fazio's here used to carry...
  9. Some questions about optional features on mandolins:

I'm looking purchase a new or used mandolin, to move up in class and quality, but before I start asking opinions about particular mandolins, I have a few questions that I'm hope some of you can help...

    Re: Alvarez A900 F style

I absolutely agree. I'd say that you can buy these for $500 to $700, but I'd not trade mine for a $1500 instrument--unless it was a $3000 instrument that someone was selling and didn't know what s/he...

I'll be in Madrid from Jan. 16 until June 15. Advice on jams, open-mics (I've been to Libertad 8 on an earlier trip), venues?
  12. Re: Brittany Haas and Chris Thile: “Crow Molly”/“Ship in the Clou

I play some fiddle, but mando is prime. But I really like this Tex-Mex polka tune that Brittany Haas did and am trying to learn in on both. Check out wenn the drummer comes in. Curiously, Chris...

    Re: Alvarez mandolin

I'm interested in the answer to Southside's question. I have an A900, carved, fancy in-lay. I've wanted to know when it was made, and I have the serial number. I think it may have been made in 1978,...

    Re: Alvarez mandolins

My name in Dan and I'm an Alverezaholic. A900 built in Japan in 1982. I'd be lucky to get $500 and would have to pay $2000 to get same quality sound and play-ability (not to speak of the rose vine...

    Re: Alvarez A900 F style

I'll never sell my A-900. Well, not for less than $1500. I just haven't heard a mando in that price range that sounds better and is as playable.

    Re: St Louis Area Jams?

Focal Point's Thursday night jams in Maplewood -- probably the oldest in St. Louis. All acoustic, all kinds of music. Starts at 7 pm and goes usually to around 11. Varies a lot from week tojust the...

I think smoking is no longer at Monday night jam. I go occasionally, and in two jams this month I ran into no smoke. We have a Thursday night jam at Focal Point, in Maplewood, but it's anything...

    Raleigh and Spencer variations

I suspect there is no one correct answer to this question, but I've seen several different chord patters for Raleigh and Spencer; 1-4-1-4-1 or 1-5-1-5-1 (most common, I think); and 1-5-1-4-5-1 or...

Everything that mandotim says abut the Loudbox I have found to be true. I can play old-time or blue grass, or I can turn up the chorus and reverb and rock out. I used this box at farmers markets...

    Maggie May -- Yeesh

How many times have you been asked if you can play the "best mandolin solo" ever, the Intro to Maggie May? Maybe it's just me, but I've been asked about half dozen times over the years.

    Re: The blues on mandolin?

I play a lot of blues mando in my bands, and I keep it simple. One I know the key, a figure where the flatted 3rd is. In G, that's Bb. In E. that's G. If some one wants to show off and play in Db,...

Re: Americana grammy to Bonnie Raitt? Really?

OK, OK, I'm voted down. Actually, I agree with the points made about frangibility of genres, and that does open space for Bonnie -- whose early blues recordings in particular are distinguished. The...

Americana grammy to Bonnie Raitt? Really?

I've got Bonnie's CD that won the Grammy, and I like it. But in the Americana genre, really? Personally, among these nominees, I liked John Fullbright the best. But if not to Fullbright, then it...
