    Re: Mandolin neck

I have seen mandolin necks from 1" to 1 1/4". Guitars from 1 11/16" to 2 1/4". Mandolin is much like a fiddle which never has a wide neck, same tuning, and it works for me. I played guitar for...

Re: How to touch up chips in SOL painted binding

You can also use the marker, and wipe it immediately after applying it. It will be less shiny and more dull, let the polish give it the shine. This way you can build up the black also. If it has a...

Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

I use paraffin wax, it doesn't draw moisture as John says.

I thought the same thing when I first clicked on John. I have a Unicorn and was hoping to see another.

Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

It's hard to tell without the instrument in hand, but I would say the neck joint was not fit correctly from the factory. In order to make this work it will have to be fit better before it is glued....

I think that is innovative for the door plate, and looks nice. No problem here.

    Re: Mandolin Gender

I don't feel my mandolins have a gender, they are mandolins and I call them by name, the Brentrup, the Unicorn, the Gibson, etc.

Re: Thornward- Lyon & Healy Bowl Back 1905

Thornward was a brand made for Montgomery Wards, by Lyon and Healy. I have a very nice guitar that is a Thornward. Mine is somewhere around the 1900's-1910's.

Re: Tell me of your love affair with an A style...

I have had one F style mandolin after a few A styles. I prefer A style mandolins and it's all I have, be it ff hole or oval hole. I have both.

    Re: Upgrading or authenticity

There are several ways to put a pickup on a mandolin without changing it's original condition, or it's acoustic sound. If you are concerned with originality it can be retained and still have a pickup.

Re: Bringing a Mandolin on a long trip

I take the mandolin I like playing everywhere. Does it show, yes. I play gigs in hot humid weather and the varnish finish shows it's wear. The finish is worn off the neck along with most of the...

Re: Bringing a Mandolin on a long trip

With a strap on the case you can carry it on your shoulder and still carry a child or two. All my cases have improvised strap on them, I never carry a case with my hands.

Re: Washburn style c number 1739

A more accurate way to measure the scale length is to measure from the nut to the 12th fret and double the measurement. The bridge will be set a little past the scale length to intonate.

I am thinking rcc56 was assuming you want to fix it, in which case you don't want to make it worse and be harder to fix.

Re: K&K Twin vs. Schertler Resocoil

I have had both and prefer the K&K. The Schertler fed back to easily, and the sound I am getting out of my K&K is better to my ear. Some will disagree I am sure.

The Unitune doesn't have the 6 guitar string settings to annoy you is all. Otherwise it is the same tuner.
