    Re: Gibson A40 (1954)

If you are going to play only bluegrass, the Kentucky will do the job. For an all-rounder I'd take the Gibson. I have a 1949 A40, and it's a very nice mandolin!

    Re: Less Collectible Gibson's

My 1949 A 40 bought thirty years ago, is a very good sounding mandolin (avatar). I had a 2003 Gibson A9 for a while, but sold it. It was a bit louder, but the A 40 blew it away tonewise. I't's a great...

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson F9?

I owned a 2003 A9 for some years, but could not adjust to the neck. It was loud, but I found out that I actually prefered the tone on my 1949 A40, so the A9 got sold.

    Re: Reischman superb tone.

Sharon's mando is a bit deeper, which make it sound a bit bassier and louder. As for tone, that is something else. Sharon is a great player, by the way.

    Reischman superb tone.

Nothing beats the tone of John and his Loar.

    Re: Gibson A-9 information wanted

Had a 2003 A9 for a while, was meant to be an upgrade from my 1949 A40. The sound was fine, but I could never adjust to the neck and the nut. My old A40 played way easier, and that's the one I still...

Re: Woody Williams "Folk" Mandolin: Yikes!

The poorly executed scroll is a dead giveaway of sloppy craftmanship.

Re: Gibson A5 vs. Gibson A50

I have a 1949 A 40, and I like it very much. Dark, woody and deep sound. Great value! (see avatar).

  16. Re: How does the Gibson F-9 compare to the Gibson F-5G?

The Jam Master is the same as an F-9, but with a radiused board and slightly wider nut.

    Re: Hearing aids?

I have used hearing aids in both ears for many years. The old ones tended to feed back, but I've gotten new ones this winter, and they are fine playing gigs or at home (no volume buttons). The only...

    Re: Wanted: Gibson A9..... Maybe?

I had a 2003 A9, and, like a fool, I let it go.No, truth be told, I like better the nut widht of my -49 A40. As for the A9: Great mandolin! Only thing is, you, coming from guitar, might prefer the...

Re: Did she really make this?

I was thinking of the builder who made original F-style mandolins that sounded good and cost $500. THAT is a good deal!

  23. Re: eastman, kentucky, jbovier, the loar and others...differences

  25. Re: Stan Jay, Pioneer of Vintage Instrument Fame Fighting For His

Very sad news! I visited in September, and noticed a reduction in inventory, and Stan's absence. All hopes and prayers for his recovery and return to bussiness!
