    Re: The Banks Hornpipe—Colin Botts

Possibly much more approachable because the fiddle version includes classical bow bouncing techniques that few fiddle tunes require and fewer fiddlers aspire to. I suspect this tune is so well know...

    Mando vibro?

How do you do vibrato on mandolin - guitar sideways string bending style, violin style longitudinal finger rocking, varying pressure behind the fret, or everything that works?
  3. Re: Best way to learn to play Smooth and Clean (not sloppy)?

There's lots of good advice here which I've heard often before on a number of instruments - slow it down, listen, play with a metronome, etc. General opinion seems that this saves you a lot of time...

    Re: Mandolin newbie

I'd suggest Eastman 305 or Kentucky 150 or 250, used if you can find a good one. They're good carved top f hole A style beginner mandolins, and well known so you shouldn't have any trouble selling...

Re: I like big triangle picks - no, wait...

Interesting, 'cos the Primetone 1.4 is my favorite large triangle pick. If Stumbler above is correct and it's made of the same material as Ultex picks, that would explain it. Here in UK, it seems...

I like big triangle picks - no, wait...

Spot the odd one out in the photo below:

    Fender F-Grip 346 1.5
    Dunlop Primetone triangle 1.4
Dunlop Ultex triangle 1.14 (thickest they do in this shape Ultex?)
    Dunlop Ultex 'XL Series Jazz...

Re: Eastman md 304 vs 314

One thing about Eastman matt finishes - they're nice, but if you touch the instrument anywhere those places don't stay matt for long. My 305 has a couple of polished spots on it where I touch it...
  8. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

I've always found the lack of interest in violins among violinists quite surprising. I can understand a weekend fiddler just liking his fiddle and not being too concerned about the technical details...

    Re: Tone Traveler

Years ago I bought a thing called a ToneRite or something similar, which is a vibrating rubbery lump with a claw to fit it on top of a violin bridge - same general principle I guess. It worked...
  10. Re: Can someone please identify/share info on this Mandolin?

Do you often find good quality mandos with no label in? It's common with old fiddles, sometimes because the original label on a passable violin says 'Stradivari' and of course it isn't.

Re: Pointy pick 'p' sound - does it carry?

Thanks guys. I kinda like the click sound as I think it helps me play more rhythmically, I just don't know how irritating it is for listeners :)

Pointy pick 'p' sound - does it carry?

I have some big triangle medium point 1.14 Ultex picks and some smaller regular size and shape 1.4 'Jazz' Ultex picks. To me, Ultex feels very stiff for its thickness. These picks sound different...

Re: Do I round off my bridge or stop touching it?

Thanks guys. I only have low end mandolins, so I have no qualms about taking abrasives to the bridge :)

Do I round off my bridge or stop touching it?

My right hand contacts the bridge of my mandolin, which has very hard corners on the outside edges. My hand doesn't rest on it, it just touches the bass end where it falls naturally . I have an arm...

Re: Fan fret tenor guitars (2022 thread)

I suspect it may be harder to play a big fiddle style instrument if the palm of the left hand touches the neck, although there are some great fiddlers who play that way. I use pretty standard...
  16. Re: Differences between Kentucky and Eastman A products

I have a Kentucky 252 and an Eastman 305 which are comparable in price A models with F holes. The Kentucky has a very slightly wider and rounder, fuller feeling neck and a more 'all round' kind of...
  17. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Shhh - don't want to scare the man off when he's getting going so good! Quality violin strings look expensive, but a good metal core string set like Helicore can last a long time (months, or more...)...

Re: Fan fret tenor guitars (2022 thread)

I think that might be a right arm adjustment, to cover a greater radius of bowing than on a 4 string. Most 5 string bowed instruments I've seen come fitted with a bowable with 5 strings (never mind...

Re: Fan fret tenor guitars (2022 thread)

What techniques do you use to play such a big fiddle? There's an interesting article here:

    ...that suggests original...

Re: Fan fret tenor guitars (2022 thread)

Interesting- is your 'tenor' violin tuned -8va GDAE? I have a 'chin cello' 5 string 16" viola tuned -8va CGDAE. The C string is a bit 'choked' sounding and hard to get working with the bow (it's OK...

Re: Eastman MD315/MD515 vs Kentucky KM750

You may also find you get better tone per $ in an A model Eastman or Kentucky in that price range - adding a scroll works out real expensive on the lower end F hole Eastmans.
  24. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

I'd recommend a better quality Chinese workshop instrument for value for money. BUT, you need to know what you're looking at or have a friend who does - they vary a lot, and some still have very...

    Re: A Different Busking Question

Yes, quite a few UK buskers now have the little square contactless payment boxes. I assume they have Bluetooth connections to their smartphones?
