Back in the late 90s I toured with a folk punk band, and you've reminded me of a gig on the east side of Germany.. we were booked to play a students union, which turned out to be a pretty much...
I used to work in a shop that imported what was probably the same OM, and the factory number on the box was something like TM-325. I think most importers will give it their own name or number, but...
Half a lifetime ago I read an interview with drummer Carmen Appice, who consumed large quantities of bananas for muscle support against cramps. Could be a connection there.
This, spot on!
If you have no plans to move it on in the foreseeable, go for it. If you're the kind of person who is already considering the next changeover then start looking for the next one.
As per my above post, full scale length is 25 1/2", capo 4 gives 20 1/4".
Loving the flexibility!
I'll do measurements when I get home, but my guitar conversion GBOM is pretty normal scale as a guitar, and with capo on 4th it matches a friend's Countryman OM. Therefore I strung it heavier, tuned...
Another +1 for a really good setup, as opposed to the 'proper' setups that many shops give you.
I recently got a Loar 310F as my kitchen mandolin, bought on Ebay but you could tell by that...
Strings-wise, I'd be more inclined to go for the older types, such as Dogalina or Savarez Argentine. Generally lower tension and aimed more at the older bowl and flatbacks, and they're really sweet...
Probably the same shysters, or their descendants, promised compensation to Ian Anderson. Trigger warning: no mandolin content, although Tull often had mandolin on the go especially during Dave Pegg's...
Haha, that'd make sense, but there's a new cover of Old Home Place in the making!
Thanks for this thread, starrbri.. I've played this song for years in Bluegrass circles, and B or B7 is the second chord. As said above, I-IIImaj is a common change.
This set me off on one of those...
I did a very similar thing, got the legs from an old chinrest (viola is better as longer legs, but I just got away with a violin one from the projects box) then shaped a piece of wood on the bench...
I have a number of those mutes, but not mandolin size, I'm afraid.
Another +1 for a solid electric. 8-stringers are available, my mate used to have a 1970s one which I didn't like plugged in but great and quiet played unplugged, so make sure it's one of those.
As...
ALso, a quick Bing search returns: https://www.bing.com/search?pglt=129&q=london+bluegrass&cvid=b620af6c07b44395b57b413568ff7439&aqs=edge..69i57j0l8.5118j0j1&FORM=ANNTA1&PC=EDGEDSE
I hear there's a fair bluegrass scene in London these days, but I'm 200 miles away so not up on news. Could be worth trying this guy for local knowledge.. http://londonbluegrass.com/index.html
Me being in UK, it's auto converted to just over 117 grand GBP.. "Predicted to sell soon, ... two people have this in their basket"
I'd probably better not!
Excellent start!
If an A with f-holes is good enough for Tim O'Brien..
Also remember that if your Eastman came to you new or barely used then this is the worst it will sound! Something happens to...
I used to work in a shop selling Eastman..
Mando model MDxyz
x - series
y - body - 0 for A and 1 for F
z - soundholes - 4 for oval, 5 for f-holes
MD mandolin, MDO octave, IIRC MDA for a tenor...
It might just be ever so slightly rusted in place if not touched for years. You could try just a drop of penetrating oil like wd40 on a pin or bit of wire to get it to the rod cap.
If it looks like...
I watched that bit of the auction.. did anyone here get anything?
hehe, Remember when Tune A Day was the modern version of teaching books?
To say Bickford is about 100 years old, it at least has some photographs..
Looks lovely! My David Lim mandolin is sycamore back and sides, but British sycamore so directly related to maple. Really sweet sounding.
I love the figuring in the back of yours.
Interesting slice of history!
My first mandolin was a Harmony kinda A style, bought new in 1982 for iirc 40GBP. Presumably Japanese made by whoever bought the name a few years previously.
NMD incoming? :))
