    Re: Under-rated mandolin players

I have always placed Andy Statman in a category all his own. There is no one that plays like him. Been listening to him since his Breakfast Special/Country Cooking days. So many great recordings but...

    Re: Under-rated mandolin players

That may be so but I have noticed that other mandolin players seem to appreciate his playing a lot. He's got his own style, that's for sure.

    Under-rated mandolin players

Tommy Burroughs. I think he's known around Nashville but that's about it. A name you don't hear much but a distinctive & highly advanced player.

  4. Re: I know this is a subjective question but rank your top player

At a certain level it becomes hard to rank. I mean, they're all great in different ways. Like, who was better Rembrandt, Monet or VanGough. Really comes down to a matter of taste. Anyway, I like all...

    Re: Gibson's 1923 F-5 Master Model Reissue

I spent a week at a camp where David Harvey was an instructor. Talking with him throughout the week I came away thinking wow, there's no one who knows more about Gibson mandolins than this guy. When...

Re: Did My Own Speed Neck

Hah! That would be the day. Re-profiling might be a bit of an overstatement. I like the U-shaped profile as shown below. Northfield's have what they call a rounded V. I found there was a slight...

    Did My Own Speed Neck

I'm not much of a woodworker kind of guy. The only power tools I've owned are a drill & a small circular saw. But I acquired a Northfield with some of the finish on the neck worn off. The previous...

  11. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

Congrats. Sounds like things worked out perfectly. And I agree with several others - you absolutely did the right thing by letting the vendor know. In this day & age it's always good to see someone...

I don't know if this is a non-starter for you or not but, if the store does financing, you may want to keep it & just finance the remainder of the cost. The rates, from what I've seen, are pretty...

    Earliest Tony Rice I've Heard

1969. At one point in the interview he mentions the lack of a bass player & that Tony overdubbed the bass on an upright. I keep trying to picture that in my mind but I can't quite get there.

Re: need advide on raising action

That's what I wound up doing. A full turn got rid of the buzzing but it felt a bit high for playing so I lowered it by a quarter turn & now everything is fine, no buzzing but not hard to play....

    need advide on raising action

I just received a Northfield NF-S and need to raise the action a bit. How much do you have to turn the wheel, typically, to make a noticeable difference? Should I be thinking in terms of quarter...

If someone was to comb those old variety shows they would probably unearth lots of interesting stuff. Those shows were on five days a week & they had a ton of content to fill.

    Wide Nut Fever?

Starting to see more & more mandolins featuring wide nuts. Is this a thing? Are mandolin players starting to gravitate towards a wider fretboard?

Re: Mando (and why to quit callin it that...)g

I chose "mandoman.com" as an email address. Thought I it was a good choice until people started saying they thought it was "man-do-man". Needless to say, that account didn't last long.
