Dave Peters' Nugget A5 Mandolin - which he let me try sometimes during lessons. Hands down the best I have personally heard in person / played. His Gibson F5 was just for media photos.
That makes sense - thanks.
Update: thanks to all for your comments. I decided to heed the voice of experience from many of the replies, so I avoided a pure superglue approach. Tonight, I inserted ebony slivers with a drop of...
Good questions – I have tried and tried to figure out if there’s a specific manufacturer for the bridges that the Gibson and Gibson/flat iron mandolins were using around the year 2000, but I haven’t...
I'm the Rector (= pastor) of St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Church, which is located right by the boundary between Houston, TX and Pearland, TX.
We are hosting a free bluegrass jam...
I have a Gibson-era Flatiron Festival F5 (Feb. 2000) with the original bridge.
Over time, the A and E strings (particularly the outer E string) have worn the string slots on the bridge saddle down...
Bumping so this thread shows up - in case some folks in the greater Houston area are looking for a jam today.
Thank you - we are going to hold this on the 2d Saturday, each month. I am hoping that we get a good turnout of pickers on Oct. 14th.
I am the pastor of a church in the Houston / Pearland, Texas area. I can pick the mandolin a bit and play the fiddle.
My church is going to start hosting a Bluegrass Jam on the 2d Saturday of...
Guilty confession - right now i am using the round corner on a Fender medium (not a heavy) and it is working really well. No need to sand a bevel when it's at that thickness.
i have wanted to...
After many years of trying to find the perfect pick, I did an analysis of the optimal dimensions for a round-cornered pick and came up with a very cheap process for making them. I am sharing my...
That is the Funky Chicken model. Big Mon played it everytime they did a Czech or German venue in Texas and he needed to break out with the Funky Chicken at a wedding.
He put chicken feed inside...
Look - you can learn the fiddle even as an adult. But you must be committed to proper technique, as exemplified by Doug Kershaw:

I agree with all the points about listening, etc.
As far as instructional resources go, my personal (take it FWIW) opinion is that the four best foundational books that will lead you into jazz on...

It’s an amazing album - the twin fiddle pieces...
As a North American option, if you search for examples of the older, pre-accordian style of Cajun & Creole musicians in Louisiana, a lot of the songs and fiddle tunes came from France in their origin...
Make sure your tailpiece isn't touching/pressing down on the top of your mando. When that happens, it mutes the sound. You can loosen the strings and use a shoestring to pull/bend the metal upward...
I think you are in luck in terms of fretting the mandolin. Possibly some players use the thumb in certain instances to play chords, but as a general rule most players never use the thumb to fret...
Thanks - it's good to know that it was not inconsistent with the way an accomplished mandolinist like Gilchrist approached this.
I've been benefitting from the Amazing Slow Downer app - slowing...
Sorry man, chicks dig the banjo. Or at keast, that's what I told my kids when I went through a phase of playing my dad's songs on the banjo (had to be banjo because he wrote them on the banjo). And...
Niles, that all makes sense to me. What gauges would you recommend for strings on a 19-inch scale?
