  1. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

While I have yet to succumb to the mandocello, an octave was attractive in that it allowed me to mate some of what I had learned from the mandolin with what I already knew from the guitar. It also...

Re: Andrew Marlin's Mando on "Harvest Moon"

I remember reading that it was a Givens kit assembled by an unknown builder, and you’re probably hearing a lot of Andrew’s hands in that video:

    Re: Mandolins near Naples, FL

Ross Teigen used to be the tech in that area, but he has relocated to Hawthorne upstate and I don’t know who (if anyone) has filled the vacuum created by his departure.

Re: Mandolin - Resonator by Republic

JeffD will tell you that nothing beats the res. Keep an eye out for a used National RM-1. And I could still be tempted by an OMI Dobro or the rare Rigel resonator.

Re: Here's my sad mandolin story...

My sad mandolin story is that I don’t have a really nice mandolin waiting for me on the other side of the country. :crying:

So what’s Nana picking on this weekend? :whistling:
  12. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

This is the video that CES recommended:

There’s good bite down by the bridge and more richness up over the end of the fretboard. Explore the entire terrain.
  13. Re: Open Back / Old Time Banjos - Comparisons to Mando Builders

A 2012 Omega just turned up at the Denver Folklore Center for $6500 (which seems like more than the new ones that hit the market this past summer):

Most people will recommend that you come across the strings, like a fiddle, as opposed to perpendicularly, as you would on a classical guitar.

If you have flat picking experience, there is...

  16. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

Most reports suggest that they electrify extremely well for stage purposes but perhaps don’t have the most traditional acoustic tone, appearance, or construction. For me, it would function as a...

    Re: NMD Stanley A5 #68

I’m of the belief that Chris applied something to the interior of his mandolins to combat shifts in humidity and later compared notes with Charlie Derrington.

Re: Gibson A-4, Teens vs 20s

I imagine that some of them bought those mandolins when the market was higher and don’t want to come out upside down / are hoping that the prices come back for them.
  20. Re: A Gibson A3 in the white. In the white — get it?

Jim, does it say A3 on the label? I’ve yet to see an A3 snakehead and thought that the A2-z’s replaced them in the product line.

    Re: NMD Stanley A5 #68

  22. Re: Decided to expand from just guitar to mandolin

  23. Re: F5 Upgrade Guidance - Gibson, Collings, Northfield
