    Re: Arthritis

I also have progressing osteoarthritis in my hands, and I've been using Voltaren accompanied with Aleve (naproxen) before going to a jam or session. Recently I tried a naturally sourced...

    Re: Best Flat-top/Pancake/Army Navy Mandolin?

If you can find a used Sawchyn Beavertail, that would be a good choice. But good luck, as I think Peter has retired from making mandolins now and used ones seem scarce.

    Re: Love for Ovals

Oval hole mandolins rock (at least for non-bluegrass music)! I have a few oval hole mandolins that I've picked up over the years and have had a hard time parting with, but my favourite is an A2Z...
  4. Re: British guy here – how should I spend $10,000?

Yes, true. Colin is building his mandolins. I plan to list my Sobell soon, but shipping to UK from Canada is outrageous now.

    Re: Shipping

Shipping from Canada, I've had a couple of "issues" (overzealous customs brokers!) with UPS and won't use them anymore. 'Nuff said!

    Re: TSA mandolin incident

I had the same experience going through security with a vintage tenor banjo about 10 years ago -- the agent wanted to look at it because she thought it looked like a beautiful instrument on the x-ray...
  7. Re: map of acoustic instrument dealers worth a visit

    Folkway Music, Waterloo, ON
    Twelfth Fret, Toronto, ON
    Halifax Folklore Centre, Halifax, NS
    Myhre's Music, Edmonton, AB
    Rufus Guitar Shop, Vancouver, BC

Re: Your advice for playing a concert

Lots of good advice above. We've also found that perhaps one humorous song per set with catchy words that will stick with the audience and a song with a simple chorus that the audience can quickly...

    Re: Gibson A3 Whiteface

I had a 1919 A-3 -- wonderful mandolin! I traded it 20+ years ago for an A-4, but I wish I had that A-3 back now!! It was a good 'un!
  11. Re: New Member, new mando, question about picks....

I agree, the Dunlop Ultex are nice and they come in different thicknesses. I used those for awhile, but now use Dunlop Max-grips because they don't slip out of my sweaty fingers! And they also come...

    Re: Peter Sawchyn closing shop

Peter's instruments are wonderful -- I have a prototype "RA2-9" A-style, basically an A2Z clone with a black stained top (still my go-to mando), and a beautiful carved-top octave mando -- bought both...

Re: Canadian Calton cases - how many made?

My Canadian Calton guitar case is # 1417 and was custom made on-site for the instrument in mid-1991, so that may provide a tighter timeline.

    Re: arthritis

At 76, I too have developing osteoarthritis in my left hand and find it bothersome playing tenor banjo and mandolin, especially reaching up to the high B. Along with Voltaren Extra Strength, I use...

Re: Sobell Gig Bag or carrying case

Post script: Out of curiosity, I googled Reunion Blues gig bag site for mandolin, and under mandolin it came up only for a banjo. So, it appears they are no longer available new. Too bad, I wouldn't...

Re: Sobell Gig Bag or carrying case

I think you would have a difficult time finding a suitable gig bag for the Sobell. I have a Sobell mando (large-body) and I can't imagine any standard-size bag for mandolins working for mine because...

Re: Flatiron A5-Artist vs Gibson A5L

I had a 1988 Artist A-5 for several years but, like an idiot, sold it! I sure wish now I had kept it -- it was a wonderful mandolin. I also had a mid-'90s A5L for awhile, but I just couldn't warm up...

    Re: David Surette has passed.

According to The Green Mandolin liner notes, he used his Stonebridge F-5, but also his 1918 Gibson F-2 on a few tracks. He also used a Trillium cittern on several tracks. Yeah, great album!

Another good Marla Fibish mandolin album is one she did with Jimmy Crowley on bouzouki and mandocello -- The Morning Star.

Re: Purchasing a good beginner mandolin in Canada

Peter Sawchyn (Sawchyn Guitars, Regina, SK) has two used mandos on its site right now -- a Kay (probably not for you!), and a blonde-top Seagull S8 for $400 CDN), but you'd have to add shipping from...

Re: Comparing Some Gibson Built Mandolins

I liked the A-1 best, then the Flatiron.
  24. Re: Advice on valuing my fathers Stefan Sobell mandolin

Ditto - agreed again! Selling into the US has indeed become a nightmare (recent experience talking). I'm also planning to sell my Sobell mandolin and appreciate the above advice as well!
  25. Re: Comments on the Value of Gibson A4 Mandolin with hard case

1918 was a "mixed bag" for the Handel tuners. My 1918 H-2 mandola (#47496) has original Handel tuners, but I've seen many of that year both with and without them, more the latter. I suspect Gibson...
