Thanks for the details Peter! I visited your website. Beautiful work! After you mentioned the thickness of the oval being thicker, I found previous discussions that you and others had on this same...
Beautiful instruments! I'll have to dig mine out of the basement and post them here.
Ok. Why an oval hole vs a circular sound hole? Does it have something to do with the stability of the top? Or is it because that is how it has always been done?
Also, obviously the bracing...
Thanks, i didnt see that. I'll remove this one.
Any idea on the rough age (time frame) for this supposed gibson? I don't have the instrument in person, but am told that there are no labels or markings inside.
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I bought a nail block from amazon. Thanks again!
Anyone have any good resources or videos for buffing/polishing picks? (ie. which grit, and also how aggressive to rub)? Specifically doing it on my toneslab and casein apollo picks.
Also, any...
Thanks for the response. That makes sense. I will have to look more closely at my picks. I have always used a right-hand bevel, for no apparent reason, but curious what a rounded bevel is like.
Let's talk 'speed bevels' on picks. How does one determine which speed bevel is ideal? And, for those of you who have experimented, can you tell the difference between a left vs right speed bevel...
Zach. You cant go wrong with more picks. I have been a big fan of Bluechips for years, although they have been sitting in the case since I got my Toneslabs...;)
Which mandolin/music related items is everyone asking Santa for this year? Asking for a friend. ;)
Thanks Mike!
Mike. Thanks for the reply. Yes, the headstock was throwing me off. If you were to date it (within 25 years...) where would you potentially place it? Thanks for your help (not just on this...
Anyone have an idea what kind of mandolin this is? Looks like it no markings. Somewhat resembles the old kay mandolins... Thanks for your help!
The man, the myth, the legend! Thanks Ted!
All,
I may have missed it in the FFCP materials, but does anyone have links to finger patterns for minor and pentatonic scales using the FFCP?
I understand how the theory works, but really...
Thanks Geechee. This is great insight. Your last statement at the end about a 3' drop really sums it up!
Lets talk cases. Obviously, Calton and Hoffee are top of the class. But come at a steep price. But curious to hear your personal experiences with Bobelock fiberglass cases. Curious how durable you...
Rcc, thanks for the details! Very interesting. I wonder why they made the oval holes that way for so long.
Mike. Super cool! I haven’t seen that one!
As always, thanks for the insight...
Pardon my ignorance. Speaking of 20s-30s Gibson A mandolins. At which point did they start building them with the neck joint closer to the bridge, allowing the player to more easily play up the...
Thanks Don! I'll have to check it out.
ALSO looking for good wood stores to check out in the area. Looking for some spruce (doesn't need to be grade A for a couple projects i have coming up).
All, I managed to sneak away from the fam while the kids are at a children's museum near Provo. Which music stores would you say are worth the drive in the SLC/Provo area? Thanks!
Golden gate tuners are made by saga instruments.
Thank you for the suggestion. I haven’t used rubner before.
